INTRODUCTION TO VEHICLE SYSTEMS & MAINTENANCE (Previously Auto Tech I)

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 9-12

State Approved CTE course and meets SD High School graduation requirement.  This course may articulate for credit to the South Dakota Public Technical Schools.

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to take the advanced Auto Tech courses at the CTE Academy.

Do you plan on owning a vehicle? Are you interested in a career in the Automotive field? If you answered yes then this class is for you. In this class students will use the classroom and the auto shop to gain vehicle specific knowledge and skills for the career and hobby opportunities in the automotive field. Students will demonstrate safe practices while testing, servicing and inspecting vehicle specific systems.  

BUSINESS VENTURES I

AAT-3030

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 9-12 

Location:                   WHS only

Students will learn about the organization, management and planning necessary to open and operate a small business. This is a project-based class in which skills will be learned through student-created and developed business plans and projects. Students will learn business concepts through creating logos, commercials and other promotional materials for their own business idea as well as developing their own entrepreneurial idea into a business plan.

BUSINESS VENTURES II

AAT-3040

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          Business Ventures I, Open to grade 9-12 

Location:                  WHS only

Students will expand on their business model created in Business Ventures I. They will learn advanced concepts with group based business projects. By hands-on participation in these ventures, students will learn about: purchasing, profit calculation, marketing techniques, supply and demand, purchase negotiations, break-even point calculation, establishing and using credit, promotional methods, payroll, franchising and other advanced business concepts.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

AAT-3110

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit | General or Fine Arts elective

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 10-12 

Analyze and create graphic designs through primarily computer-based projects including photo editing, logos, package designs, posters, collages, vector illustrations, and animations. Students will incorporate typography guidelines and the elements and principles of design into their graphic designs. To create their designs, students will use the software programs Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Recommended for students with intermediate computer skills who know how to copy, cut, paste, change fonts, font styles and font sizes, edit and insert graphics.

HOME MAINTENANCE

AAT-3120

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 9-12

Plan to be a homeowner someday? This class is a must! Home maintenance will teach students how to repair, maintain and improve a home through hands-on projects. Students will learn through completing numerous activities related to shop safety, use of power tools, pouring concrete, wall framing, plumbing, electrical, tiling, and drywall installation and repair. 

REPAIRING SMALL ENGINES

AAT-3140

Length/Credit:      One Semester, 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 10-12

Do you plan on owning power equipment like lawn mowers or snowblowers? Do you like hands-on learning? If you answered yes then this class is for you. In Repairing Small Engines students will obtain an in-depth knowledge of engine operation and theory. Students will safely disassemble a 4 stroke engine, identify parts and function, reassemble and confirm operation of the engine. Students will gain troubleshooting skills and learn about the varied fields connected with this course. 

WOODWORKING TECHNOLOGY I

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to take the Cabinetmaking course at the CTE Academy.

This course provides information on tools, machines, materials, and processes related to the broad field of woodworking. Complete multiple assigned projects determined by the instructor; construct a student-planned project approved by the instructor; demonstrate safe work habits; identify different types of wood; correctly apply various finishes. 

WOODWORKING TECHNOLOGY II

Length/Credit:      One Semester , 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          Woodworking Technology I, Open to grade 9-12

State Approved CTE course and meets SD High School graduation requirement.  This course may articulate for credit to the South Dakota Public Technical Schools. Students will provide their own lumber.  

This course will allow you to take the skills you learned in Wood Tech 1 to another level. Students will learn advanced woodworking techniques and gain experience utilizing the full capabilities of the woodworking machines to construct projects. Emphasis will be on advanced woodworking joinery and complex projects. 

WELDING I

AAT-3210

Length/Credit:      One Semester , 0.5 credit

Prerequisite:          None, Open to grade 9-12

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite to take the advanced Welding courses at the CTE Academy.

Do you like to fabricate with metal? Interested in a career in Welding? In Welding I students will obtain skills needed for a career or hobby in the welding field. Students will safely demonstrate and show proficiency in SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), Oxy-Fuel Welding and basic metallurgy concepts.
