Cross Country
Staff Member: Jacob Rast
On September 4th 2026, Logan Richters competed for 1st place in the 6th grade Cross Country meet against Corbin Lynch with a 12 minute and 19.5 second finish, and came out on top with a finish of 12 minutes and 4 seconds. Logan says after the meet, “It’s as simple as keep pushing yourself, and beat your previous record”. At the last 200 meters left of the race, Logan and Corbin begin to push each other towards the finish, and Logan out paces Corbin and gaps him by 15 seconds! Logan also explains what motivates him to push himself to his absolute limit and says, “My dad says three things, give 100 percent effort, make it your hardest workout, and have the right mindset”.
To anyone wanting to begin their journey to also finish first place like Logan, the Cross Country team wants anyone who's willing to join, be a part of the team. Logan lastly talks about in a recent interview on how to start running and explains, “It’s easy to join, and there is always encouraging teammates and coaches willing to help with what needs to be done”. There is plenty of time to join, and it will make you mentally tougher.

Our DMS football team, which we all know and love, is back up and running for the season! This season, they have had quite a few special things happen. So far, they have faced Spearfish Middle School in a warm-up game of sorts called a Jamboree, as well as West Middle School, another school in town. More on that later.
Our football season has started with our first opponent, North Middle School, having to cancel due to their school not being open on the day of the game. Our next opponent is South Middle School, a tough opponent that we will come out with our first win. Our 8th and 7th grade teams faced them on the 24th of September.
Next, about the Jamboree against Spearfish. Spearfish was our first game against another school. Our defense was on lock during this game with some big hits, tackles for loss, sacks, and even an interception! The Jamboree was a game in which the offense started at the 40 and played for 20 minutes. Then, with each failed 4th down or touchdown, they went back to the 40.
In our first official game of the season, we played against West Middle School. With a score of 6-28, a rough loss for the Patriots. In the game, our defense made some crazy goal-line stops and even had a few forced fumbles and a fumble recovery! Now to offense, DMS scored one touchdown, which was scrambled in by a backup QB. Now, they are about to face off against South at South's stadium for their first away game!
Soccer

Patriots soccer is in full swing! Girls varsity starts the season with a close game against Bell Fourche. They fought hard the whole game, but unfortunately lost 1 to 3. That following Saturday the girls played against the Huron Tigers! It was a very close and physical game with a score of 0 to 2. They played and left everything on the field. The girls are still going strong even after they lost to Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Washington.
After playing Lincoln and Washington the girls played Rapid City Central! It was a good game that got delayed 18 minutes due to lighting. After a quick break, the girls got back out there! They had a great first half, but couldn't keep their momentum up and lost.
That following Thursday, the girls faced off against Sturgis Brown, another close game with 1 goal scored! But Sturgis caught up quickly and ended up beating them 4 to 1. The girls will play Spearfish Spartans, Belle Fourche, Rapid City Stevens, STM, and Sturgis for their last games. Our varsity girls have given it there all the soccer season, fighting hard every game! Who knows what they will be able to achieve next season?
Volleyball

Summer is officially over and the school year has officially kicked off, and with school comes sports and lots of homework. Just kidding… well kind of.
Aren’t you just so excited for the school year? Well, if not, sports can help with the fun or not so fun of school! Volleyball is a fun after school activity and sometimes even during school too! No, but seriously it’s a great team sport to learn communication skills and how to work as a team. Whether you’re a middle, outside, setter, or hitter, you always have to be a good team member. Which means always supporting your teammates through their ups and downs.
I interviewed two volleyball players, asking both what their favorite part of playing volleyball is. Jordan Martin stated, “My favorite part about volleyball is being supported by my team no matter if we win or lose and always having fun.” Summer Handboy stated, “I love the dynamic of the team, how many friends you can make, and also the supportive coaches willing to help.”
The season has been going great so far with wins and some loses, but that is okay because there always is another chance. It's called next ball mentality, so just shoot to get the next ball and don’t be down because you didn't get a ball, just be confident with yourself and your team of course. Good luck this year Patriots!
We Want You to Join Wrestling
Staff Member: Alex Anderson
Do you play sports? Or like being active overall? Well, you should think about trying out wrestling. Girls wrestling is actually the fastest-growing high school sport in America! Wrestling is great for staying in shape and improving for other sports like football, soccer, volleyball, etc.
But what even is wrestling? In wrestling, your goal is to grapple your opponent and take them down to the mat (there is a soft mat so if you slam someone down or get slammed, you won’t get hurt) using different techniques or moves to take them down. For example, a double leg. A double leg is one of the first moves you learn. You just need to drop your level, take a big step forward toward your opponent, and drive through their legs. Then, when you get a takedown- that is what it is called to bring someone down onto the mat-you get 3 points, and you run top moves where you just want to break their base down to pin them. You pin someone when you get both of their shoulder blades on the mat for 5 seconds, and the referee smacks his hand on the mat, and you automatically win this way. But if you get taken down, you are on “bottom,” and you have to escape (worth 1 point) with a variety of moves and either get back to your feet to hopefully take them down, or you can get a reversal (worth 2 points), and that is when you get from the bottom position to the top position.
There is also one other way to get points (not including penalties), which is to get back points. You get back points when you are on top, and their back shoulders are not on the mat but past 45 degrees, almost pinning them. Also, if you are good enough, you can be pulled up to the high school level and try to get a varsity spot, but only 7th and 8th graders can get pulled up, and you will be approached by the coach, so do not beg to get pulled up. So if you find any of this even kinda interesting, you should sign up for middle school wrestling. It starts in the 2nd quarter and is not in the way of some other sports like boys' basketball or track, so give it a try and you might like it!
Knowledge Bowl
Staff Member: Aiden Munson
The DMS Knowledge Bowl team is back for the first quarter, and everyone’s excited to get the season started. Led by Head Coach Matt Howard, the team has been practicing since mid‑August to prepare for their competitions, with the final meet happening on November 7th, 2026.
Every Wednesday and Thursday after school, students meet to practice answering questions, working together, and thinking fast. These practices help the team get ready for the real meets, where they represent DMS and compete against other schools.
The competitions take place on Saturday mornings over a five‑week stretch. When the team steps up to the buzzers, they have to rely on quick teamwork to answer questions about science, history, literature, and more. This year’s competition dates are September 26, October 3, October 17, October 24, and November 7.
The season is already moving quickly, and the team is hoping for a strong run. For anyone who wants updates or reminders about practices and meets, the team shares information through the Stack Team App. Parents and students who want to follow along can join the group to stay connected and support our Patriots throughout the season. The team is ready, and the season is looking strong so far!
