What do conferences look like?

While each conference is unique in its topics, a typical Model UN conference will start out with each delegate introducing their country's/character's goals. Then, delegates will move on to debate on issues brought up in the conference and propose solutions during what's called a Moderated Caucus. Eventually, someone will call for an Unmoderated Caucus in which delegates are free to move around and write papers and resolutions to what was discussed during Mod. Delegates will then vote on the papers and move on to debating the other issues at hand. If this sounds confusing, don't worry! You will get plenty of practice with Model UN procedures during our meetings and VHS MUN conferences.

What should I wear and bring to conferences?

There is a recommended supply list posted on google classroom under "General Resources." In general, delegates should wear formal business attire (such as a suit or a blazer) and, at the very least, bring some pens and sticky notes.

Do I have to go to all the conferences?

No! You only attend the conferences you want to attend. If you just want to show up to meetings and not go to any conferences, that's fine! If you want to go to every single conference we go to, that's great! If you only want to go to a select number of conferences, that's great too!

What experience do I need?

The only thing you need to be successful in Model UN is a passion for politics, public speaking, and negotiating. Additionally, if you feel like you don't know much about politics or the skills mentioned above, Model UN is a great place to learn!

What is crisis?

Crisis is a type of MUN conference where the delegate often takes the role of a character rather than a country. It is fast paced and has two main forums-- in-room and back-room (sometimes referred to as Crisis).

In-room works much like the standard committees: delegates will engage in debates and try to push solutions to issues discussed that benefit the interests of their character.

Back-room is what makes crisis unique. Delegates can send crisis notes to people working in the back-room in order to take actions, spy on people, etc behind the scenes. In the past, this has led to assassinations, coups, court trials, German bears killing off the entire human population, and more.

You will get practice with crisis during club meetings and VHS MUN conferences.
