Our library subscribes to several databases that contain high quality ELA-related content to support your curriculum.  

Literary Reference Center is a full text database that combines information from respected reference works, books, and literary journals, as well as original content from EBSCO Publishing . This resource includes plot summaries, synopses and work overviews; articles of literary criticism; author biographies; full text of literary journals; book reviews; classic & contemporary poems; classic & contemporary short stories; full text of classic novels; author interviews; and images of key literary figures.

Poetry & Short Story Reference Center is a rich full-text database of hundreds of thousands of full-text classic and contemporary poems, plus thousands of short stories, biographies, essays, lesson plans and learning guides. It also includes high-quality videos and audio recordings from the Academy of American Poets and other sources. 

NoveList K-8 Plus is a database about books specifically for younger readers. It helps kids find books that are just right for their reading level and interests. Parents and teachers can also find tools to teach with books and engage young readers. It allows readers to use a favorite author or title as a template to locate other authors and titles of interest. You can browse theme-oriented book lists at every reading level and look for outstanding titles in Award Winners. You can learn more about books and authors through Feature Articles, Book Discussion Guides, and BookTalks. NoveList K-8 includes picture books, children's "chapter" books, children's and younger teen titles in both fiction and non-fiction.

Explora is EBSCO's interface for Schools and Public Libraries. Designed to meet the unique needs of its users, Explora supports both student research and classroom instruction with the following features:

Designed for middle school students, this database contains full text for popular middle school magazines, full-text biographies and historical essays. In addition, it includes primary source documents, reference books and a vast image collection.

Sora, HIDOE's shared eBook collection provides the quickest and easiest way to access thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, comic books, and read-along digital titles for students and teachers. Search by subject, curated collections, "always available" titles, and more!

Did you know that you can also check out magazines? There are almost 5,000 titles available for your and your students, that can be used as supplemental materials for your lessons and assignments. They're also great discussion starters and rich with images and relatable text.

English teachers, in World Book Online, once you select which product to view (Discover or Student versions), click on Educator Tools at the top right and search for material by content area and grade level to view all the standards-aligned resources, including articles, games, lessons, and media that you can share with and lead your students through.


Swank offers legal, convenient access to thousands of feature films, documentaries and foreign films to support classroom instruction. Students, check with your teachers for access. Teachers, if you haven’t set up your account yet, please consult the Teacher Guide emailed to you, or ask the librarian. You can set up Google Classroom to assign videos in Swank as well.
