Wilson Elementary School provides all students with standards-based music education from a highly-certified music teacher. Music classes for PreK-2nd graders provide students opportunities to develop foundational skills in music, such as aural skills, rhythmic and expressive speech, exploratory and rhythmic movement, and singing. Students use rhythmic and Orff instruments to create and perform multi-part arrangements. Dramatic play and dance are also fundamental components in students’ music experiences.
Prior to COVID restrictions, 3rd grade students learned the soprano recorder and had opportunities to play sopranino, alto, and tenor recorders in ensembles. Fourth grade students continued recorder while learning beginning ‘ukulele chords and first position picking. Fifth grade students were assigned to either a beginning string or band depending on their homeroom. Instruments in these ensembles include violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion.
During COVID, upper elementary students will continue working on fundamental music skills and have additional opportunities to practice improvising, singing, and dancing. With one-to-one devices, students will also have new opportunities to compose music with technology.
