HAWAI'I BASED LIBRARIES & ARCHIVES

The Hawaiʻi State Public Library System (HSPLS) is the only statewide public library system in the United States. With 51 branches across 6 islands, HSPLS serves as a pillar of our community helping to nurture a lifelong love of reading and learning through its physical and digital spaces. The site is more than just books — you can access quilt patterns, yearbooks, eBooks, talking books for the visually impaired, take free online classes, learn a new language or visit one of the 10,000 events they put on each year.


Get a virtual library card using this online form. Your Virtual Library card is valid for 45 days and provides access to all online digital resources. To activate all library card privileges (including placing requests online for materials and borrowing books, DVDS and more), please visit your local library with proof of Hawaii residency.

Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is the largest research library in the state of Hawaii. The Library serves as a key resource for the flagship Mānoa campus as well as the other University of Hawaiʻi system campuses.

Navigate to their Research Guides for helpful search strategies and resources on a wide variety of topics, from Anthropology to Zoology, written by subject specialists. Though you may not have access to the university databases and print materials, there is a wealth of other information and links to websites that can be accessed by the general public.

Robert Allerton Art Library at the Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA)

The Robert Allerton Art Library at HoMA is an invaluable resource for researchers, museum visitors and members, art collectors, and students. With over 40,000 books, periodicals, biographical files, and catalogues, the Library plays an integral role in HoMA’s mission: To inspire and uplift our community through transformative art experiences that celebrate creativity, cultivate wonder, foster empathy and enhance knowledge in order to deepen our connection with one another and the world we share.

The Hawaiʻi State Archives was established in 1905 and is responsible for collecting, appraising, preserving, and making available to the public Hawaiian government records of enduring value. The primary collections consist of government records from the monarchy to the current legislative session, private collections of individuals and organizations, historical photographs, maps, and library collections specializing in Hawaiian history, culture, and Pacific voyages.

Strong collection of very useful Hawaiian-related books and journals from the 1800s to today on Hawaiian history, culture, language, and issues. Also includes many specialized collections important to Hawaiian research, such as the Hawaiian Music Archive, Polynesian Voyaging Society's archive, Hawaiian Place Names, Hawaiian Genealogy Indexes, Hawaiian Newspaper Collection, and more.

ʻUluʻulu is Hawaiʻi's official state archive for moving images.

Located on the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu campus, the archive is dedicated to the care, preservation, and digitization of film and videotape related to the history and culture of Hawaiʻi.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is the largest daily newspaper in Hawaiʻi, formed in 2010 with the merger of The Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Honolulu Civil Beat is an investigative news website that practices watchdog journalism related to the U.S. state of Hawaii.
