Waiakea High School Parent Information & Student Participation Rules
Due to the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health (DOH) recently updating its respiratory safety
guidance for K-12 schools, the Hawaii State Department of Education (Department)’s
“COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidance for School Year 2023-24” including the athletic portion
of the COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidance is no longer valid and has been withdrawn effective
July 11, 2024.
The Department’s Office of Student Support Services (OSSS) is in the process of
updating its Health and Safety Guidance for the 2024-25 school year to align with the current
DOH guidance.
In the interim, effective immediately, schools, including athletics, may begin complying with the
DOH guidance, including the following summary changes:
COVID-19 is no longer addressed separately from illnesses with similar symptoms. The
new guidance addresses all respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza,
and respiratory syncytial virus.
● Return to work or school, including athletics, should be based on the timing of fever
resolution and improving symptoms. There is no longer a mandated isolation protocol
following an exposure or a positive test for any virus.
● Testing does not impact the timing of return to work or school. Testing for COVID-19 or
influenza should be decided by an individual’s healthcare provider. Prompt testing is
recommended to determine if antiviral treatment is indicated so schools may encourage
families and staff to seek medical care when needed.
If you have questions about the changes to the guidance, please contact the Department’s School
Health Section at (808) 305-9882.
