What is the Summer Learning Lab?

Our virtual Summer Learning Lab, organized by HIDOE's Leadership Institute, is an innovative and equitable approach to online learning. Six collaborative teams of excellent teachers across Hawai'i have designed one-hour learning sessions each weekday from July 8-17.

The first days of class are dedicated to getting-to-know students and meeting different needs. Interactions aim to strengthen total well-being through belonging to a community of learners.

Each class is offered for an hour and consists of whole and small group time. An optional half hour is dedicated to an open discussion where teachers and students will reflect on the day's content and how instruction is impacting learners. Empowering student voice and being involved in the process of giving feedback provides a highly engaging format for all ages.

All learning lab sessions will be video recorded for the purpose of sharing effective distance learning strategies. Recordings and student work illustrating success may be shared in professional development sessions and online resource sites.

What time is the one-hour session?

All sections are held twice daily. Students attend only one online session every weekday from Wednesday, July 8- Friday, July 17th.

Preschool through 8th grade and all Music students may choose to attend a 10-11AM or 1-2PM class.

Optional: Students may attend an additional daily session from 2:00-2:30pm to reflect on their day's experience and learning.

High School students may choose from either a 2-3PM or 4-5PM class. Students may attend an additional daily session from 3-3:30PM to reflect on their day's experience and learning.

What is the cost of a course?

The course is free for students! Students must commit to attending all sessions of the course.

Who can enroll in the course?

Children in Hawai'i who are currently in preschool through (entering) 12th grade are eligible to enroll in the Summer Lab. All may register but preference will be given to HIDOE & public charter school students. We welcome students with special and exceptional needs.

Guardians will be required to sign media release waivers, as we will be recording the sessions and may use portions of the sessions in professional development sessions and online websites.
