WHAT IS AN ABSENCE/TARDY?
Students are marked as absent if they are not in the classroom at 8:05AM. An absence can be changed to a tardy if a student arrives late to school with a Tardy Slip from the office. Students who arrive at school after 8:05AM should head straight to the Main Office for a Tardy Slip. When a student reaches the classroom, the teacher will take the Tardy Slip and change the absence into a tardy.
Whenever a student is absent from school, the parent/guardian must call the school and explain
the reason for the absence. This should be done by 8:15 a.m. on the day that the child is
absent. Please call 587- 4510 ext. 1. A follow-up telephone call may be made by the school.
Please note that frequent absences adversely affect students’ progress.
A note is also required the day the student returns to school. Follow-up action will be initiated
with parents/guardians to address attendance (absences/tardies) problems.
Schools maintain records of “excused” and “unexcused” absences, however, a student is considered to be chronically absent when they miss 15 or more days of school, regardless of the reason.
Examples of unexcused absences may include family vacations, non-HIDOE sporting events, and other personal business.
Excused absences shall require notification from the parent of guardian indicating the date(s), student name and reason for absences which may include family court hearings, hearings involving foster children, funerals, and medical, mental health, or dental related reasons when a verifiable note from a doctor or dentist is provided. The school will request a physician's note for absences of five days or more.
