5th Grade Overview
Reading
In fifth grade students become avid readers who are able to make inferences about author's perspective and purpose, character development, and theme. They understand key elements of texts including photos, timelines, and captions and how those elements contribute to an understanding of the reading. Students should spend time reading books for enjoyment!
Writing
During the school year, students work on writing three types of essays - opinion, narrative, and informational. Students work toward mastery of the five paragraph essay with clear organization, evidence/elaboration, and proper conventions.
