The ʻōhai is a native plant, endemic to the Hawaiian islands. The plant requires full sun and minimal water, so this plant thrives in the dry climate of Waiʻanae moku. The ʻōhai is a small, upright tree with silvery leaves and bright red to orange flowers. ʻŌhai is known to be a kinolau of the godess Kaiona that resides in the Waiʻanae mountain range.
Lei ʻōhai is a waihona ʻike (repository) with knowledge, history, cultural and educational resources for the Waiʻanae community.
It is our intention that these resources are used to pass on the knowledge of our ancestors, the brilliance of our moʻolelo, the significance of our ʻāina to embody a sense of pride in our Hawaiian identity.
This website and the resources included were created through the Ke Ala Naʻauao grant and the DOE Nānākuli-Waiʻanae Complex Area team.
