In May 1988, upon learning that Haha‘ione had no alma mater, Mahealani Pescaia, a former Hawaiian Studies specialist, wrote a poem about the school and its beautiful setting. Because the poem was difficult to set to music, former Principal Charles Shores took the main ideas from the poem and with his father, Charles Shore Sr., wrote the music for the alma mater. It was formally introduced during the May Day Program in 1988 to commemorate the school’s twentieth anniversary of existence as a
K – 6 elementary school.
The words to the song are as follows
HAHA‘IONE ALMA MATER
Fair skies of blue look down upon our valley
Flowing from mountains down to meet the sea.
Here stands our school, our own dear Haha‘ione
Proudly your sons and daughters sing of thee
Hand motions to the song were later added by kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Charlene Ishimoto
