Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Hawaii compared to the fifth leading cause of the death in the US Mainland. When someone is having a stroke, time matters as 1.9 million brain cells could die every minute that blood flow to the brain is blocked. Hospitals across the state have implemented procedures to reduce the time to treatment when suspected stroke patients arrive. However, the public is unaware of the importance and urgency of getting potential stroke patients to the hospital and the critical role EMS plays. The purpose of this presentation is to educate the students on the signs and symptoms of stroke and to change the mindset of utilizing EMS when a stroke is suspected. Stroke care begins in the ambulance; it is not a taxi ride to the hospital.
