School Year 2026-27! Hūlō!
Aloha as we begin the 2026-27 school year, lets think of all things OCEAN. For us in Hawaiʻi that means loko iʻa (fishponds), kahakai (beaches), apapapa (reefs), iʻa (fish) and koʻa (coral). All these places and things help keep us fed and fit! We are ocean people that lived by and in the sea. The limu and iʻa fed us, the waves amused us, and the ʻahupuaʻa system worked to keep all of it healthy. We can be konohiki for the ocean too! The video linked below give you some information about loko iʻa and its value to our people.
Ke Konohiki newsletter will once again to be sent to all NWCA teachers. It will include, as always, information about the moku, resources to support engaging instruction and other tidbits. Please use it as a teaching tool and reach out to Puanani Wilhelm at puanani.wilhelm@k12.hi.us if you have specific needs and she will try and find what you need.

School Year 2025-26 was year 3 of the Ola Moku Waiʻanae initiative. This complex-wide instructional focus provides both content focus and teaching practices that support deeper learning, critical thinking, and making connections. This presentation highlights some of the school learning activities demonstrating student stewardship work in school and out in the community. Great work Waiʻanae Moku!
Year 4 of the Ola Moku Intiative is focused stewardship of our makai areas, fishponds, beaches, near shore and ocean. The ocean sustains us and we need to take care of it. The more we understand about where we live, itʻs history and cultural practices, the more we care and will be able to make sound decisions for it in the future. A modern konohiki must also see Hawaiʻi through a global lens and apply academic learning for solutions to environmental issues.
Kamehameha Publishing provides a set of leveled readers that focuses on the natural environment of Hawaiʻi. These books feature the plants, animals, and places of OUR home, not those found on the continent. Our students need to see their world reflected in the things they read and learn from. These books are downloadable, leveled for grades K-3 and have supplemental materials. Click on the image above to access the site.
