Return to Learn: Distance Learning Readiness

Onboarding Course (7 Modules) for Opening of SY 2020-2021

Onboarding Course Overview

The Office of Curriculum and Instructional Design (OCID), the Office of Talent Management (OTM), and the Office of Student Support Services (OSSS) have collaborated with a team of exceptional Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) educators to develop a course with seven teaching and learning modules for schools, teachers and staff. These modules were created to support effective distance learning as our HIDOE teachers prepare and manage their virtual learning opportunities for the 2020-2021 school year.

The Onboarding Course includes asynchronous (self-paced, self-directed) instruction for schools. For planning purposes, please note that each module will take about one hour to complete with additional extension activities to increase learning and understanding. The course is offered to complement your school-level training and continuous professional learning. Although the seven modules are not an all-encompassing distance learning opportunity, it is a solid starting point as we enter into this new way of teaching. As you peruse each module, use the embedded questions for personal reflection, as part of ongoing support at your schools, and/or to deepen conversations in your professional learning groups. The extension section within each module is intended to stretch learning if you would like to grow even further.

We understand that this is a challenging time of change for everyone. As new circumstances develop daily, we will pull together, more than ever before, in ways that will strengthen us as educators and the communities we serve.

Staff members that complete the seven module Onboarding Course need to submit a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course. Please see the "Completion" section at the end of the modules.
