WAC0100 CHINESE 1
This advanced course is only offered to Grade 8 students. Grade 8 students that successfully pass the course will be granted a HS Credit for Chinese.
This introductory Chinese Language and Culture course is designed to align with the Hawai’i World-Readiness Standards for Language Learners (HI WRSLL). We will use abundant comprehensible input to learn Mandarin Chinese (普通话) with simplified characters. As language and culture are deeply intertwined, we'll also dedicate significant time to exploring Chinese cultural topics. This will help students gain a deeper understanding of the language and the people who speak it.
Students will learn to communicate on topics such as first impressions, exploring new places, celebrating special occasions, school life, and a balanced schedule. The course is supplemented with materials from the Go Far with Chinese level 1 curriculum produced by Cheng & Tsui.
This course is a precursor to the Chinese courses at James Campbell High School. Therefore, students should expect a relatively high level of rigor and come to class prepared to work hard every day. After-school studying, project preparation, and revision will likely be necessary to receive high marks.
