Aiea Elementary School library is committed to the safety and health of our students and staff. Listed below are some steps for library procedures and safe handling of items.
Wearing a well-fitting mask reduces the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory pathogens. Masks are highly effective and inexpensive tools to protect yourself and others.
Masks are not required, but welcomed at the library. Hand sanitizer is available at the door. Paper towels, tissues, and disinfectant wipes are also available.
Library seating areas provide a small distancing space. Spaces are marked as reminders to avoid crowding and to honor personal space of others. Be kind and respectful of everyone's space!
During recess and lunch recess the library is open and accessible. Students from each class in grades 2-6 are invited to enjoy the library space during this time. Ask your teacher for a library pass!
All bookshelf areas are available for browsing and to look through. For this reason, students are asked to hand sanitize upon entering to maximize sanitation and minimize germs.
SORA ebook collection is an electronic option for reading. It contains thousands of electronic books, audio books, and read-along stories to enjoy on any device with internet access! Learn how to use it, HERE!
Students borrow books during their scheduled library time, during recesses, and after school.
It's highly recommended students wear their name tag during library visits.
Students should check books for any damage before leaving the library and show this to the library staff.
ALL borrowed books should be returned to the library by 8:30 the morning of your library visit, OR brought with you on the day of your library visit.
Return books in good, clean condition – no physical damages or writing in books, please!
Students who return books with damage will be assessed a fine and will need to pay for the damage.
Be honest! If your book gets damaged, let your teacher or librarian know ASAP! Sometimes we are able to repair rips and tears, erase marks, or air dry books.
Students may renew (or re-borrow) an unfinished book up to two times, either at the library or online using the OPAC.
Bring any book to renew WITH you to your scheduled class library visit. Books can also be renewed during recess or after school visit.
Keep water bottles OUTSIDE of backpack, please!
Keep your books INSIDE your backpack until you get home. Too many books get lost on the bus.
If raining, cover the books while walking to class or returning it to the library.
Love your books! Keep them safe in your backpack when you're done reading them at home.
Overdue Book Reminders:
Students with overdue/lost books will not be allowed to borrow until books are returned or paid for.
Students with financial hardship may work off their lost book cost. Please see the librarian to make special arrangements for special cases.
Overdue/Lost book reminders will be sent to each teacher to pass out to students.
Homeroom teachers will remind students and families of the overdue or lost book via phone call, text message, or note in communication tablet/student planner.
