Wheeler Middle School's Hula performance group is called Nā Pua Nani ʻO Wheeler which translates to "The beautiful flowers of Wheeler." It was started back in 2009 as a small group of 5 students who were interested in learning the hula. Under the direction of Mrs. Vierra, a Student Support Advisor, the group has expanded to more than 25 students, who perform several times a year. Mrs. Vierra has been dancing hula for many years and volunteers her spare-time to teach classes after school. She also selects the music, choreographs the hulas, and teaches the meaning behind the songs and gestures.
Nā Pua Nani ʻO Wheeler program fosters traditional Hawaiian values, including lōkahi (unity), ha’aha’a (humility) and kōkua (helping others). Through this hula program, students will learn both Kahiko (ancient) and ʻAuana (traditional) style of dancing. They will not only learn about hula but also about Hawaiian customs, music, and legends. When a student becomes a member, they become part of our ʻohana (family). If you are interested in joining, please visit Mrs. Vierra's office in room D-9 to find more about Nā Pua Nani ʻO Wheeler. Absolutely no experience necessary, but students must be committed, respectful and always positive!
