Grade 9:
Coming of Age - Journey, Discovery, & Growth
English 9 engages students in an exploration of the concept of identity through moments of journey and discovery. As a result of these experiences, characters often cope with their own coming of age, loss of innocence, and inevitable internal and external conflicts as they question the beliefs and values of the world around them. Students will consider the role perspective and culture plays in the formation of one’s identity. This course pairs classics with more contemporary works to illustrate the enduring nature of this experience. There are two core titles, The Odyssey and Romeo & Juliet, that all students will read. All students will produce pieces of informational, narrative, and argumentative writing aligned with the state standards
