Montessori Music Classes
MONTESSORI MUSIC CLASSES 2023-4
CHILDREN’S HOUSE MUSIC (ages 3 though kindergarten)
In brief, we sing and play during music classes on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We sing songs of joy and fun and songs that relate to their experiences in the classroom. We play Montessori bells for ear training and we incorporate movement and artistic expression as part of listening. We have three performances to put on your calendar: November 16 at 5:00, February 5 at 5:30, and April 25 at 6:00.
YOUNGER ELEMENTARY MUSIC (grades 1, 2, 3)
Like Children’s House, we sing and play during school-day music on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. This age has the most prodigious memory for lyrics of any children at our school. They are really good as learning long and wordy songs. We play with music reading, ear training, musical interpretation through movement and art, and recorder playing. Thanks to the support of SEAFOM, we have after-school opportunities as well: Violin Club on Tuesdays at 3-3:35 and Ukulele Club on Thursdays. We will start these clubs on the week of August 28. There are three performances to put on your calendar: November 16 at 5:00, February 5 at 5:30, and April 25 at 6:00.
OLDER ELEMENTARY MUSIC (grades 4, 5, 6)
All Montessori 4th, 5th, and 6th graders get to participate in one of the school-day ensembles: Choir, Explorer Orchestra, or Intermediate Orchestra. We have three performances to put on your calendar: November 16 at 5:00, February 5 at 5:30, and April 25 at 6:00.
Elementary Choir
We will be singing an eclectic mix of styles from folk to classical, renaissance to rap to rock, show tunes to opera. Most of our repertoire will be unison but we will be singing some harmony. We rehearse on Tuesday and Friday afternoons during school. Choir will perform at the concerts on November 16 at 5:00, February 7 at 5:30, and April 25 at 6:00.
Explorer Orchestra
This ensemble is for students that want to play a new instrument that they have no experience with (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin, cello, or bass). We rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays during school. We will try out all of the instruments of the orchestra during the first trimester, choose our favorite, and form a beginning orchestra for the second and third trimesters. There will be information about how students will borrow, rent, or buy their instrument of choice. Explorer Orchestra will perform on November 16 at 5:00 and as a full orchestra February 8 at 5:30 and April 25 at 6:00.
Elementary Orchestra
Students with experience playing an orchestral instrument (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, or bass) can play in this ensemble. We will be playing a mix of classical and popular music. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Fridays during school. Elementary Orchestra will perform on November 16 at 5:00, February 5 at 5:30 and April 25 at 6:00.
OLDER ELEMENTARY AND AMP COMBINED BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL MUSIC (grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
Thanks to support from SEAFOM we offer starting the week of 8/28:
Open Studio (practice and lesson time) happens on Mondays from 2:30-3:30, Thursdays from 8-8:30, and Fridays from 3-4 starting on 8/28;
Extended Choir for those interested in more challenging singing on Tuesdays from 8-8:30 starting on 8/29;
Extended Orchestra for those interested in more advanced playing on Wed. from 8-8:30 starting on 8/30.
AMP MUSIC
We plan, rehearse, produce and perform four Coffee Houses (performances) during the year. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning at school. Our concert themes include Movie Music performed on October 12 at noon; Rap, Commercial, and Holiday music on December 14 at 5:00; Country music on March 14 at noon; and Pop and Rock music on April 25 at 6:00.
