OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER:  February 23-27, 2026

Theme (science/social studies/literacy: We will read a book titled, Cats are Liquid by Rebecca Donnelly, a silly story that shows the weird spaces cats get into and how their bodies can represent different states of matter. Using this text, we will also focus on the comprehension skill of identifying the main idea and supporting details. In a minilesson, students will work on identifying context clues within sentences to determine meanings of unknown words. 

Writing: Students will work on handwriting cursive Pp. We will will to talk about fact/opinion as we move into opinion writing. We will explore an opinion paragraph about why Elizabeth Peratrovich is a hero. The sentences will be all mixed up and students will cut and glue in order:  hook, topic sentence, details/reasons with transition words, closing sentence. Students will write in their journals about winter camp!

Language: This week we will continue our work with irregular plural noun endings: those that change vowels in the middle (ex: foot to feet), those that greatly change in spelling (ex: mouse and mice) and those that don't change at all (deer and deer).

Bears: soft c sound (fence, ice)

Eagles: vowel teams ee/ea/ey

Heart/High Frequency Words: (Heart words don’t always follow the rules and we often have to remember their spellings “by heart”. HF words appear most often in texts) 

Bears: Review- many, any, been, into, friend New-because, something, sometimes

Eagles/Seals: Review: much, might, mile, miss, mountains New-myself, near, next, never, night

(Both grades are exposed to and practice both sets of words) 

Math:

2nd: The second graders will use open number lines to add two-digit numbers. They will then practice simple regrouping one place, tens to ones, using place value blocks.

3rd: 3rd graders will They will practice regrouping as well as subtracting across zeros. They will use open numbers lines, place value blocks, related addition facts to solve these problems in different ways. They will incorporate their knowledge of rounding to estimate differences and compare these to exact answers.

Special Activities Last Week:  Last week was very busy! I appreciated meeting with so many of you at conferences! Thank you for making the time to talk with me about your amazing children! Wednesday we squeezed in as much learning as we could, with a focus on President's Day and Elizabeth Peratrovich Day!  Thursday and Friday were great days out at the Methodist Camp...students were able to pick their activities from snowshoeing, learning about mountain rescue, working with search and rescue dogs, taking hikes, beading, origami, yoga and more! 

This Week: We will get down to work this week! We also have All School Centers on Friday!
