OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: February 2-6, 2026
Theme (science/social studies/literacy: We will practicing sequencing the events of a story using the text we've been reading titled, The Puddle. Students will consider words that can describe properties of matter and add these words to their concept webs. We will read a book titled, Cats are Liquid by Rebecca Donnelly, a silly story that shows the weird spaces cats get into and how their bodies can represent different states of matter.
Writing: Students will work on handwriting cursive Tt. They will write in their journals in response to their weekends as well as to The Puddle text. We will explore onomatopoeia through story and children will work on using fancy letters to represent the meanings of these words. We will work work on narrative writing paragraphs, incorporating the paragraph structure we have practiced through the use of our conversation sticks (topic sentence, details, closing sentence).
Language: This week we will delve into irregular plural noun endings: If a word ends in -f or -fe...drop those letters and add "ves"

Heart/High Frequency Words: (Heart words don’t always follow the rules and we often have to remember their spellings “by heart”. HF words appear most often in texts) (Continued)

Eagles/Seals: Review: kind, last, late, leave, life, list, laugh, light, long/ New: much, might, mile, miss, mountains
(Both grades are exposed and practice both sets of words)
Math:
2nd: The second graders will work with using different strategies that involve adding two-digit numbers. They will use place value blocks, open number lines, and hundreds charts.
3rd: 3rd graders will They will practice regrouping as well as subtracting across zeros. They will incorporate their knowledge of rounding to estimate differences and compare these to exact answers.
Special Activities Last Week: It was a busy week with completing MAPS assessments in the mornings. We enjoyed a hike with Discovery Southeast on Thursday. Ms. Amy and Mr. Mason incorporated states of matter into our walk. They also played games and had time for free building with snow in the meadow. Friday we had a small group, but they had a super time at the pool and listening to Ms. Amelia read stories at the library. All School Centers was a hit Friday afternoon with students participating in activities such as snow building, art, felt pets, slime making and more.
This Week: We are going to get back into a rhythm after testing! Monday is Groundhog's Day. Students will learn about what this day is, make predictions and make headbands! Wednesday is the 100th day of school! Your child can dress up as a "100 year old!" Please see the signup for snack items under "Links and Forms". We will make a 100 day snack and activities will center around the 100th day!
