OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER:  April 6-10, 2026

Theme (science/social studies/literacy:  This week we will talk about jobs in our community. The children will be bringing home an interview form to ask you about your job (either or both guardian can be interviewed). They will return these to school to share with the class!  We will work on sequencing the story "Thank you Omu" that we read last week. We will also read the book "Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed," and compare the two texts using a Venn diagram.

Writing: This week students will complete an organizer for their opinion opinion paragraphs. The prompt will be: Would a sled dog make a good pet? Yes/no...and why? Students made a husky craft to go with their writing.  They will work on handwriting letter "Ll." They will also write in their journals in response to the text written above.

Language: Possessive nouns/ Irregular possessive nouns:  Next up:  verb tenses

Phonics: (continued from last week due to special activities)

Bears: "ing" verb endings

Eagles: "oo" and "u" sound as in the word "book"

Heart/High Frequency Words: (Heart words don’t always follow the rules and we often have to remember their spellings “by heart”. HF words appear most often in texts)

Bears: woman, women, move, both

Eagles/Seals: saw, school, sea, second, seem, seven, shall, show, side, six

(Both grades are exposed to and practice both sets of words)

Math:

2nd: Students are working on regrouping in addition and will move onto subtracting 2-digit numbers following that. Looking ahead, that will involve using a number line, hundreds chart and regrouping using place value blocks.

3rd: Students are working on multiplication concepts: drawing and solving problems using equal groups of objects. They are also exploring arrays (rows times columns). Students are learning how factors can be switched and the product remains the same (but the picture representation looks different). **It is time to start memorizing multiplication facts!  We will be working on skip counting, cutting one of the factors in half to solve a smaller problem, then doubling the product to find the answer!

Special Activities Last Week:  During Forest School, students used estimation skills to predict measurements of objects in the woods. Then they used various measuing tools to find exact measurements. On Friday we did our first reading session with reading buddies from the middle school classes! We read chapters 1-3 of The Wild Robot. In the afternoon we watched "Balto" to celebrate the finish of the Iditarod race, and our tracking efforts! I made the class "puppy chow" to enjoy during the movie. Many also chose to make bunny headbands. The 4-8 classes filled and hid Easter eggs for our the K-3 classes to find outside!

This Week: Grade 3 will be taking the AK Star literacy test Tuesday morning. We will do a little practice with the platform on Monday. We will have All School Centers this Friday. Please consider signing up to help out!
