Worku Jimma, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Information Science, Jimma University, Ethiopia
Born in the countryside of central Ethiopian highland and grew with a farming community, here I am on the net and could present my journey to the world! A long one indeed! I travelled on foot for hours to go to school at an early age, then to a university by traveling hundreds of kilometers by bus, then to universities abroad on a flight for hours, including at night, and also I could live and work in Europe for over a decade! I am married and I've four children: Frijaan, Obsaan, Olmaasaa & Nimoona, the meaning respectively, 'Seeing Own's Eyes'; 'Patiently;' 'HIS (God's) deeds'; and 'We Shall Win'.
In my life journey, I faced quite a lot of challenges, but came out stronger, and finally I obtained a terminal degree and now trying to pay back to my fellow citizen who paid tax, and gave me an opportunity to study when they are uneducated! What else satisfy me than such a small deed of trying to pay them back? As the saying goes "It is never too late to realize what is important in your life and start fighting for it." Now, I am doing this, and I am not alone into this, but encouraging others to do the same by sharing this story. Some of them have already joined me in this journey. I believe that together, we can make a difference!
Currently, I am based at Jimma Institute of Technology, Jimma University (JU), Ethiopia involving in teaching-learning, research, and community service for over a decade, and now contributing my part towards achieving JU's vision: Aspiring to be a world-class research university committed to advancing transformative and sustainable development.
My Philosophy
I believe that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind (mindset). My transition from agricultural background to the cutting edge of AI is a testament to the power of lifelong learning. I am committed to "paying back" my community by mentoring the next generation of teachers and researchers, and building the digital architecture my country needs to thrive.
