The goal of reading response is to assist readers in increasing their reading comprehension by gaining insights into text, revealing their thinking, and interacting with literature in meaningful ways. 4th grade students will be required to respond to the literature that they are reading for homework. The responses will be summaries of a book they are reading at home. As the year progresses, I will provide scaffolded support with the end result being a response entry that includes an introduction, summary, thinking, evidence, as well as a conclusion.

October!
Students will be writing 1 entry per week. Entries are due by Friday, but can be turned in any day of the week. With this, I am instructing students to plan for long term assignments, asking them to think ahead and work around their sometimes busy schedules. These beginning entries should have a heading, an introduction to the book(3-4 sentences), and a summary of the part they read (5-6 sentences). Encourage your child to use the summarizing strategy that we have been practicing in school (F,N,Th,F). With this strategy, students should be jotting down a sentence about what is happening in the book every 1-2 pages. They then combine their notes to make a paragraph summary. I have provided direct instruction on reading response, and included support materials and examples in each student's reading response journal. I am happy to work with anyone who needs additional support during WIN or after school. Encourage your child to be assertive and responsible and ask to meet with me if they would like support.
November/December!
Students will continue writing 1 entry per week. Entries should still have a heading and introduction. This month I am asking students to add transitions into their summaries. I have talked to the class about how using transitions makes their writing "smoother" for the reader. Students can use the transition "In the part I just read" to start their summary. First, next, then, and finally are good transitions to use as students write about the events that occurred in their book. All students have a list of writing transitions in their Reading Response Journals.
January/February!
Students will continue writing 1 entry per week. Entries should still have a heading, introduction, and summary. Students are expected to use transitional phrases to start new paragraphs as well as transition words to connect the events in their summaries (examples are included in the RR Journal). This month, students will begin to add a third paragraph to their response. They will write 1-2 sentences to tell about what they were thinking while they were reading. They can use the transitional phrase, "While I was reading I was thinking" to start this part of their entry.
March/April!
Students will now begin adding the final components to their reading response entries. The components that I am expecting them to add are an explanation of their thinking, evidence to support their thinking, and a closing sentence. We have added additional resources to their journals to support these components. As your child works on their, encourage them to look at the resources in their journals. When students demonstrate proficiency with writing a complete entry, they will GRADUATE, receive a special certificate, and be exempt from writing any more entries.
