Now for a few words of wisdom about being grateful. I am so thankful to be a part of the Traina Family. For six years now, you’ve all helped me through some of my most difficult times in life, while at the same time lifting me up to some of my greatest days. We’ve suffered the tragedy of loss and celebrated great successes together. I always get a little sentimental and sad as we come to the end of the year, because we say goodbye to our eighth graders and to some of our dedicated staff members, but then I remember to be thankful for having them in my life. I also realize there is a whole new set of kindergartners, TKers and pre-schoolers on their way, and that we will get to welcome new staff members to the amazing Traina Family. It is their turn to experience the great caring of this community, and they too will be grateful for that opportunity. I hope all of you who we are sending off into your next stage of life are thankful. You will be missed and we send our love and best wishes. Now for a few words of wisdom about being grateful. I may have used this quote before, or something similar to it, but it is extremely important for us to remember. “Happiness isn’t about getting what you want all the time. It’s about loving what you have and being grateful for it. Nobody wanted the past 15 months to go the way they did, but I think the majority of us found a greater appreciation for some of the things around us during that time. It could be something as simple as spending more time with our puppies or cats at home, or doing extra gardening or decorating in our bedroom. It certainly helped me appreciate my friends and family that I didn’t get to see as much as I wanted to. To our eighth graders, who missed out on Great America and an eighth grade dance, we are blessed to have the graduation and ice cream social that last year’s class didn’t get, and you are blessed to have so many historic moments ahead of you. Bottom line, the man was experienced and had a lot of learned knowledge and connections, so his thoughts are deep. It is staff appreciation week, and I want to pause and acknowledge the type of person it takes to be a good educator and to celebrate our outstanding team. A great educator is successful with 97 percent of their students, but stays up every night worried about the other three percent. A great educator cries with, for and because of the kids. A great educator never does a good enough job…in their own mind. A great educator can never get enough credit, so remind them always that they are appreciated. Some people will excel in athletics and learn life leadership skills through sports, while others will learn creativity and out of the box thinking through art and will find ways to express themselves and entertain others with their talents. Now for a few words of wisdom about being inclusive. Sunday night, I received a Special Olympics medal. I was so honored to be bestowed with this medal. I was having dinner with a family I was meeting for the first time, and “warned” in advance that their daughter was a little different and that she would have a million questions. I thought, well that’s perfect, because I’m definitely a little different, and I ask a million questions too. As it turned out, we chatted about baseball, her track and field performances and the fact that she was a black belt. We talked about wanting to visit every major league baseball stadium in our lives, and despite the fact that she was a Giants fan, I thought she was just one of the neatest and nicest people I had ever met. And at the end of the night, she gave me one of her special olympics medals. A gold! Sometimes people see somebody different and stay away from them, but if you do that, you may miss out on meeting an amazing human being. Inclusion is being asked to dance.” Inclusion is much more than just allowing someone to be somewhere or accepting them into a group. It is about engaging with that person, making them an active part of conversations, decision making and all that the event has to offer. Last evening at dusk, many of the students and families on campus began the celebration of Ramadan. The month-long observance is a celebration by those of the Muslim faith, one of many religions we have here on campus. One of the great beauties of this country and our campus here at Traina is that the freedom to practice or not practice any religion is accepted and supported by the community. We support all of our fellow Tigers during their cultural celebrations or observances. I am proud to be a part of such a supporting and caring community. Women’s history fact of the day: Mary Elizabeth Bowser was born today in 1839. A former slave, Bowser served as a undercover agent for Ulysses S. Grant by working as a servant in the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. With the racial prejudice of the day, the assumption that slaves were illiterate and not intelligent, and the way slave servants were trained to seem invisible, Mary was able to glean considerable military intelligence by simply doing her job.

At a very young age Grace Murray Hopper showed an interest in engineering. As a child, she would often take apart household goods and put them back together. Little did her family know, her curiosity would eventually gain her recognition from the highest office in the land.

Hopper went to Yale University, where she earned her Masters and PhD in Mathematics. Afterwards she began teaching at Vassar College.

In 1943, Hopper resigned her position at Vassar to join the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). In 1944, she was commissioned as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) and assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard University. Her team worked on and produced the Mark I, an early prototype of the electronic computer. Hopper wrote a 500-page Manual of Operations for the Automatic Sequence-Controlled Calculator in which she outlined the fundamental operating principles of computing machines. Additionally, while working on the Mark I, Hopper coined the word “bug” to describe a computer malfunction.

After the end of the war, Hopper became a research fellow on the Harvard faculty and in 1949, joined the Eckert-Mauchly Corporation, continuing her pioneering work on computer technology. Hopper was involved in the creation of UNIVAC, the first all-electronic digital computer. She was promoted to Captain in 1973, to Commodore in 1983, and to Rear Admiral in 1985. Two years later she was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the highest decoration given to those who did not participate in combat.

Hopper’s work with computers not only gained national attention, but she was recognized internationally. In 1973, Hopper was named a distinguished fellow of the British Computer Society, then the first and only woman to hold the title. After retirement Hopper returned to the classroom, where she taught and inspired students until her death on January 1st, 1992. Although Hopper had many career accomplishments, she later told her biographer, her greatest joy came from teaching. In 2016, Hopper was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her body is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Lillian E. Fishburne, the first African-American female to hold the rank of Rear Admiral (RDML) in the United States Navy, was born today in 1949.

Trust is a tricky thing, for some of us it is hard to give, for many of us it is hard to keep. Each day we are presented with difficult and challenging situations where other’s trust in us will be tested. I always share with you that your actions should show what matters to you most. Today is Traina Spirit.

Sandra Day O’Connor will always be known as the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States, but her impact reaches much further than that. Her family wanted to instill in her a love of education, but schooling options near the ranch were limited for a young woman. Ultimately, her parents sent her to live with her grandmother in El Paso to give her the best chance at a quality education. She thrived at the Radford School for Girls and graduated high school two years early.

At sixteen, she was admitted to Stanford University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics. In 1950 she was admitted to Stanford Law. During her time at Stanford Law, she worked on the board of editors for the Stanford Law Review. She completed law school in just two years as opposed to the usual three. She graduated third in her class, with one of the students ahead of her being fellow future justice, William H. Rehnquist. Despite her impeccable qualifications, Sandra Day O’Connor struggled to find employment in the legal field due to a heavy bias against women as attorneys. She began her legal career working for the county attorney of San Mateo for free, after turning down a paid position as a legal secretary. Once she proved herself as an asset, she got a job as the deputy county attorney.

She worked in the state supreme court for only two years before President Ronald Reagan nominated her in 1981 to become the first female justice to serve on the United States Supreme Court. She was unanimously approved by the Senate

Sybil Ludington: The Female Paul Revere

On the night of April 26, 1777, 16-year-old Sybil Ludington rode nearly 40 miles to warn some 400 militiamen that the British troops were coming. Much like the ride of Paul Revere, Ludington's message helped Patriot leaders prepare for battle. But Ludington was less than half Revere's age and rode more than twice as far to carry her warning.

The daughter of militia leader Colonel Henry Ludington, Sybil leaped into action on that fateful day in 1777 when a rider came to the Ludington house in Dutchess County, New York to warn them about a British attack on nearby Danbury, Connecticut. With Col. Ludington’s men on leave and the messenger too tired to continue, it was Sybil who rode through the night gathering almost the whole regiment by daybreak.

While Paul Revere’s ride was immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem, Ludington’s tributes have been on a somewhat smaller scale. She was honored with a postal stamp in 1975. And, it is said that Ludington even received the appreciation of a grateful general, when George Washington, himself, came to her home to say “thank you.”

Women’s history fact of the day: Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman. Angelou received several honors throughout her career, including two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005 and 2009.

As a young child, she went through a traumatic experience that left her a virtual mute for five years. She recovered to become an actor, a singer, a poet and an author, writing a total of 36 books. A little known fact is that Angelou was also the first ever African American cable car conductor in San Francisco.

Women’s History Month Fact of the day. The wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt changed the role of the first lady through her active participation in American politics.

Who Was Eleanor Roosevelt?

Eleanor Roosevelt was the niece of one U.S. president, Theodore Roosevelt, and married a man who would become another, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Redefining the role of the first lady, she advocated for human and women's rights, held press conferences and penned her own column. After leaving the White House in 1945, Eleanor became chair of the U.N.'s Human Rights Commission. The groundbreaking first lady died in 1962 in New York City.

As her husband achieved success in politics, Eleanor found her own voice in public service, working for the American Red Cross during World War I. She also exerted herself more prominently after Franklin suffered a polio attack in 1921 that essentially left him in need of physical assistance for the rest of his life.

Woman’s history facts of the day: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Known for her iconic collars, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a justice on the United States Supreme Court from 1993 until her death in 2020. She graduated first in her class at Columbia Law School, and was the first Jewish woman (and only the second woman) to ever serve. She spent much of her career fighting for women’s rights and gender equality, and has since become an icon for the feminist movement.

One of NASA's human 'computers,' Katherine Johnson performed the complex calculations that enabled humans to successfully achieve space flight. Her story is depicted in the 2016 movie 'Hidden Figures.'

Who Was Katherine Johnson?

Katherine Johnson graduated from college at age 18. She began working in aeronautics as a "computer" in 1952, and after the formation of NASA, she performed the calculations that sent astronauts into orbit in the early 1960s and to the moon in 1969. Johnson was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and saw her story brought to light through a book and a feature film the following year. She passed away on February 24, 2020, at the age of 101.

Beginning in the late 1930s, Johnson taught math and French at schools in Virginia and West Virginia. In 1952 she was hired as a “computer” but After only two weeks, Johnson was transferred from the African American computing pool to Langley's flight research division, where she talked her way into meetings and earned additional responsibilities.

She plotted the path for Alan Shepard's 1961 journey to space, the first in American history. When actual computers took over, she was still summoned to check the work of the machines, providing the go-ahead to propel John Glenn into successful orbit in 1962.

Women’s history month fact of the day: Born in 1892 in Seattle, Washington, Alice Ball broke many barriers before she died at the age of 24. She studied chemistry at the University of Hawaii, where she became the first woman and Black American to obtain both her Master's degree as well as a professorship at the university's chemistry department.

While there, Ball studied the properties of chaulmoogra oil, which was a promising treatment for leprosy at the time but difficult to use due to its chemical makeup. Ball developed an injectable form that isolated the active ingredients, rendering a more effective treatment, but she died from an unknown illness before she could publish her findings.

Another scientist took credit for her work, and it would take close to 90 years after Ball's death that the University of Hawaii would officially acknowledge her scientific contributions and declare February 29 as "Alice Ball Day."

Over the years, many women either had others take credit for their work or had to write things under a pseudonym to get them published. Again, we have made great strides is this country, but we still have work to do.

Women’s history fact of the day: Amy Tan is a Chinese American novelist who wrote the New York Times-bestselling novel 'The Joy Luck Club.' Tan is a Chinese American writer and novelist. In 1985, she wrote the story "Rules of the Game," which was the foundation for her first novel The Joy Luck Club. The book explored the relationship between Chinese women and their Chinese-American daughters. It received the Los Angeles Times Book Award and was translated into 25 languages and it was made into a major motion picture for which Tan co-wrote the screenplay.. Tan was born in Oakland and grew up in Northern California but when her father and older brother both died from brain tumors in 1966, she moved with her mother and younger brother to Europe, where she attended high school in Montreux, Switzerland. She returned to the United States for college, attending Linfield College in Oregon, San Jose City College, San Jose State University, the University of California at Santa Cruz and the University of California at Berkeley.

Women’s History Month Fact of the day. Today is International Women’s Day and in honor of that, I am sharing this G.D. Anderson quote: “Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” The United States is often at the forefront of being progressive in the world, but at times has strayed behind other countries who have elected women into positions of power. However, with the election of Kamala Harris as the first female to serve as president or vice president of this country, we are making progress. It took others before her Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Geraldine Ferraro running for high office to open the door. Harris’ election as vice president has made it that much more likely that a woman gets a chance at the presidency in the coming years. Today we celebrate female leaders all over the world.

Be trustworthy and honest with your friends and you will have friendships that last a long time. With the thoughts of culture and women’s history month swirling around in my head, I decided to wear one of the many ties I own with my daughters on them. My youngest daughter Faith has been really into the ancestry part of our lives over the past year. Often we think of our culture as being what country our ancestors are from or a religion that our family is a part of, but not everyone knows their past relatives, but that doesn’t leave them without culture. Culture can also be a series of beliefs, experiences and traditions that help make you who you are today. My mom never met her father, or even knew who he was and was raised by my grandfather as his own. My dad lost both his parents before he graduated high school and was a Jewish boy who lived for a period time with Catholic God Parents. All of these experiences and people created a culture that my parents group up in that they shared with me, to help me become the man I am today.

How does this relate to women’s history month you ask? Yesterday, I shared the story of Dolores Huerta, because she did great things. Little did I realize that she was actually related to one of our teachers on campus. It was a reminder that we need to celebrate the great efforts of the women, like my own mom, who was adopted by my grandfather as her own and raised three boys on her own, for their amazing efforts. I run across amazing women all over our community. Today I want you to honor the women that are a part of your culture. It could be a foster mom, your aunt, your mother or grandmother, a family friend that you call auntie, a social worker, a teacher, a campus aide or anyone who touched your life in a special way. Dolores Huerta was a woman who impacted her own family first and eventually made great change to society. Chances are, your loved one has or will do the same.

Dolores Huerta is an activist and labor leader who co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers.

Dolores Huerta was born Dolores Fernández on April 10, 1930, in Dawson, New Mexico, the second child of Juan and Alicia (Chavez) Fernandez. The young family struggled, and by the time Dolores was 3, her parents divorced and her mother moved Dolores and her two brothers to Stockton, California. Dolores maintained a relationship with her father, who later became a union activist and a New Mexico state legislator. Juan’s own political and labor activism later proved inspirational to Dolores

Activist and labor leader Dolores Huerta has worked to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and to fight discrimination. To further her cause, she created the Agricultural Workers Association (AWA) in 1960 and co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta stepped down from the UFW in 1999, but she continues her efforts to improve the lives of workers, immigrants and women,

Women’s history fact of the day: In 1756, long before the women’s suffrage movement gained any traction, Lydia Taft was legally allowed to vote. Her husband Josiah Taft was a prominent member of their community in Uxbridge, Massachusetts; he served several terms as a legislator and presided over town hall meetings. When he died, the townspeople agreed to permit Lydia to vote in her husband’s place. The decision was made in keeping with the tradition of “no taxation without representation”, since Josiah Taft was the town’s largest taxpayer. Lydia went on to cast several more votes, contributing to the town’s stance on important matters like financial contribution to the French and Indian Wars. It wasn’t until 166 years later that woman were given the right to vote in 1920.

It said, “Trust is like an eraser, it gets smaller and smaller after every mistake” We do make mistakes in life, and we are trusted with things whether it be responsibility, a secret or loyalty and support. When we break that trust or we fail to meet those standards the level of trust is diminished, often permanently. So do everything you can to prove you can be counted on and that you are trustworthy.

Women’s History Month Fact of the day. Geraldyn "Jerrie" Cobb was the first woman to pass astronaut testing in 1961.

But she wasn't allowed to travel to space due to her gender. She testified on Capitol Hill in 1962, saying, “We women pilots who want to be part of the research and participation in space exploration are not trying to join a battle of the sexes,” according to the New York Times. “We see, only, a place in our nation’s space future without discrimination.”

She was not able to go into space, but about 20 years later, Sally Ride was the first woman in space — and the first gay astronaut.

Sally Ride became the first woman in space on June 18, 1983, when she flew on the space shuttle Challenger. It wasn't until her death that her obituary revealed she was gay; it referred to Tam O'Shaughnessy as her "partner of 27 years."

Black history fact of the day: Joycelyn Elders, the first person in the state of Arkansas to become board certified in pediatric endocrinology, was the fifteenth Surgeon General of the United States, the first African American and only the second woman to head the U.S. Public Health Service. Long an outspoken advocate of public health, Elders was appointed Surgeon General by President Clinton in 1993.

Born to poor farming parents in 1933, Joycelyn Elders grew up in a rural, segregated, poverty-stricken pocket of Arkansas. She was the eldest of eight children, and she and her siblings had to combine work in the cotton fields from age 5 with their education at a segregated school thirteen miles from home. They often missed school during harvest time, September to December.

Despite stacked odds against her Ms. Elders succeeded in breaking down barriers and doing great things for society. To think that this 87 year old woman was born in a time and place where communities were still segregated is a reminder of why discussing Black History Month and the great accomplishments for change is still so important. We need to celebrate the progress and the people’s accomplishments and remember that it is an on-going process.

Black History Month fact of the day:

Hiram Rhodes Revels representing Mississippi became the first African American to be sworn into United States Senate on February 25, 1870. Revels served as a Republican representing the state of Mississippi from February 25, 1870 until March 3, 1871. He was born on September 27, 1827 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to free African Americans. Revels worked as an ordained Methodist minister and served as a high school principal in Baltimore, Maryland.

Black History Month fact of the day: Hattie McDaniel was able to carve out a place for herself in Hollywood despite rampant racism. She paved the way for many African American women, but not without her fair share of obstacles. Her performance as “Mammy” in Gone With the Wind (1939) won her Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars that year. However, the national movie premiere was in Atlanta. Because of Georgia’s Jim Crow Laws, she was prohibited from attending the event.

Hattie went on to star in over 300 films, was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 2006, and was the first Oscar winner to appear on a postage stamp. Despite her ultimate success, her choices (insofar as she had any) in roles were often criticized. The NAACP said Hollywood’s roles for African Americans were narrowed to servants or characters whose main purpose was being comically slow and dim-witted. Hattie was criticized for settling for lesser roles than her white colleagues. Despite this, Hattie went on to have a stellar career.

Now for a few words of wisdom about self control. Act like you’ve been there before. That is a saying many sports coaches have shared with athletes over the years. It is exciting when you are successful in sports, life and any competition. It is important to celebrate victories and success, but it should also be done in a way that is respectful of your opponent or understanding that someone else gave their all and isn’t enjoying the moment you are relishing. That is not to say you shouldn’t celebrate or be excited, but someone with true self-control, can celebrate the moment with enthusiasm and joy while celebrating and appreciating their opponent through a handshake or acknowledgement of the efforts of the opponent. Math Olympiad today is canceled for 7th and 8th grade.

On this day in 1979, Frank E. Peterson Jr. was named the first African American general in the Marine Corps.

Although they served in both the revolutionary war and the war of 1812, Black men were not allowed to join the US army at the start of the Civil war, but that changed for many reasons as the war carried on and by the end of the Civil War, roughly 179,000 black men (10% of the Union Army) served as soldiers in the U.S. Army and another 19,000 served in the Navy. Nearly 40,000 black soldiers died over the course of the war. By war's end, 16 black soldiers had been awarded the Medal of Honor for their valor.

"Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letter, U.S., let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pocket, there is no power on earth that can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship."

While joining the US army helped many to escape slavery and many were honored for their service, the fact that it took over 100 years after that for an African American to become a general is an indicator that change does not happen overnight and on its own. It needs to be a pro-active process.

The quote I saw this morning that resonated with me about self-control was this one. “Self-Control is knowing you can, but deciding you won’t.” We live in what many refer to as the land of opportunity. All opportunities aren’t equal, and some opportunities are appealing, but aren’t the right thing to do. Sometimes people will say things like if you steal a million dollars, or break that window or grab a new car and you know you wouldn’t get caught, would you do it? Well think about this, if you are afraid of being caught in the first place, then you probably shouldn’t do it, even if you won’t get caught, because clearly you already know it was wrong. That is why you wouldn’t want to be caught doing it in the first place. With something to think about, this is Mr. Silman reminding you to make it a great day or not, the choice is yours.
