JPS Gallery Tokyo Presents "Joint Solo Exhibition by Three Artists": A Triptych of Independent Realities
What happens when three radically different approaches to contemporary art converge within a single exhibition? JPS Gallery Tokyo is pleased to present the "Joint Solo Exhibition by Three Artists", running from November 7 to November 22, 2026. This unique curatorial framework divides the gallery’s interior into three distinct, sovereign ecosystems. Rather than imposing a unified theme, the exhibition embraces the stark conceptual contrasts between three emerging Japanese artists: Yuuka Tajitsu (Tetto), Support Systems, and Misa Ikenaga. Navigating the gallery from the entrance to the deepest room becomes a psychological journey that explores how contemporary art is defined, dismantled, and rebuilt through three radically different material methodologies.
Yuuka Tajitsu (Tetto): Visualising the Invisible Threshold
The exhibition opens with "__=𝑎 + 𝑏𝑖", an immersive spatial installation that constructs the overlapping boundaries between reality, memory, and imagination. Drawing her title from the mathematical formula for complex numbers—combining real (𝑎) and imaginary (𝑏𝑖) parts—Yuuka Tajitsu explores the fragile threshold between what is physically present in the room and what is merely felt by the body.
Building upon her foundation in two-dimensional painting, Tajitsu’s craft is driven by a profound desire to preserve personal memories and express emotions that cannot—or perhaps intentionally should not—be put into words. Her canvases act as visual anchors, characterised by atmospheric textures and evocative colour fields that mimic the haze of a fading dream. For this exhibition, she pushes these visual elements beyond the traditional frame, orchestrating a multidimensional installation. By extending the aesthetic atmosphere of her paintings into the surrounding architecture, she invites visitors to step physically inside her inner landscape. Through this holistic spatial approach, she gives tangible volume to phenomena that inherently evade human sight: fluctuating temperatures, fleeting scents, sudden awe, and the acute sense of loss.
Born in Yokohama, Japan, in 2000, Tajitsu balances her artistic practice with an active role in gallery operations—a dual perspective that sparked a significant philosophical shift. For years, she wrestled with the heavy, paralysing expectations of the contemporary art world, constantly asking herself, "What is art?" and "What is the value of an artwork?" For this exhibition, she has deliberately stopped demanding immediate answers to these questions. Instead, she surrenders entirely to the visceral power of "yoin" (余韻)—the lingering traces and reverberations left within the body. By translating the invisible weight of a memory into a physical space, she asks the viewer to experience her work like a sudden scent that vividly awakens a forgotten past—an echo that persists long after the event itself has faded.
Support Systems: The Intuitive Present and the Architecture of Memory
Transitioning into the centre of the gallery, the atmosphere shifts sharply with "Nice to meet you!!" (お初にお目に掛かります!!), a solo exhibition vibrating with radical intuition and pure, unfiltered joy. Here, Support Systems actively reconstructs his own personal memories and everyday experiences on the canvas, guided entirely by immediate sensory pleasure.
By translating fleeting thoughts like "I like this colour" or "It would be nice if this were here" into physical form, Support Systems channels momentary excitement directly into his craft. His visual style is defined by energetic colour-blocking, dynamic compositions, and layered brushstrokes that he proudly describes as "rough around the edges in a good way". Trusting his immediate sensory impulses over rigid planning, he transforms mundane landscapes and motifs into highly vibrant, emotionally honest arrangements.
Born in Mie Prefecture, Japan, in 1993, Support Systems grounds his artistic mission deeply in community accessibility, running the "Nabari Bari Bari Art Club" (名張バリバリアートクラブ) to seamlessly integrate art into daily life. Admitting he gets "bored easily," he thrives on constant aesthetic reinvention. Yet, while he intended a total artistic shift for this show, he playfully subverts his own rules by incorporating older canvases among his new works, acknowledging that he inevitably carries his past with him. In this space, the artist explicitly relieves the viewer of any pressure. He invites the audience to simply stand before his reconstructed memories and allow themselves to absorb the joyful arrangement of colour and shape.
Misa Ikenaga: The Membrane of Language and Unfixed Meaning
The physical and psychological journey resolves in the final space with "From the Umwelt" (環世界より), an exhibition exploring the exact moment when abstract forms slowly begin to take on meaning.
Working primarily with monochromatic ink drawings, Misa Ikenaga presents compelling pieces from her series "If All the Words Were Gathered" (すべてのことばをあつめたら) and "Garden of Articulations" (分節の庭). Her craft is deeply intertwined with her conceptual framework: she treats language as a "membrane" (膜)—a conceptual boundary that both separates us from the world and connects us to one another. On the canvas, her organic ink bleeds, abstract pools, and raw stains act as this very membrane. Because ink naturally spreads and resists total control, it physically mirrors the fluid, unstable nature of communication. Her works capture the exact cognitive threshold where a viewer looks at an abstract mark, forms an image, and assigns it a specific word or meaning.
Born in Hyogo, Japan in 1996, Ikenaga draws directly from her recent life experiences to shape this conceptual focus. Disillusioned with the commercial art circuit, she spent years stepping away from public exhibitions to test the unadulterated strength of her practice. She engaged in seasonal live-in labour on the remote Rebun Island in Hokkaido and worked at ARTBASE Momoshima in the Seto Inland Sea. This grounded lifestyle fundamentally shifted her philosophy: she realised she cannot exist outside of human relationships, and that society is a natural element of a broader ecosystem. Instead of avoiding these intersections, she is fascinated by what happens after a piece leaves her hands, as it generates new meanings and relationships with viewers in the real world.
Consequently, Ikenaga does not dictate a definitive visual message. Her title, "From the Umwelt", nods to the unique perceptual world of each individual observer. She invites the audience to linger in the quiet, ambiguous space between a raw stain and a recognisable image, appreciating the ongoing cognitive process where meaning slowly begins to emerge, take shape, and inevitably transform again.
JPS Gallery Tokyoでは、2026年11月7日(土)から11月22日(日)まで、「Joint Solo Exhibition by Three Artists」を開催いたします。
