At Jordan Stables, we believe that great horsemanship is built on trust, skill, and communication between horse and rider. One of the best ways to develop these qualities is through Working Equitation (WE)—a discipline that blends the precision of dressage, the agility of obstacle navigation, and the practical skills of ranch work. Whether you’re new to riding or an experienced equestrian, Working Equitation offers something for everyone, helping riders and horses grow in confidence, ability, and partnership.
Working Equitation originated in Europe and South America as a way to preserve the traditional riding styles of cattle herders and working horsemen. In countries like Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France, riders depended on their horses to navigate challenging terrain, maneuver obstacles, and handle livestock efficiently. The sport was officially formalized in 1996 in Portugal, combining the classical riding traditions of these regions into a modern equestrian discipline.
Today, Working Equitation is practiced worldwide as both a competitive sport and a valuable training method that enhances horse and rider versatility. It incorporates four phases:
Dressage – Develops precision, balance, and collection.
Ease of Handling – Challenges riders to maneuver obstacles with finesse.
Speed Phase – Tests agility and accuracy under time constraints.
Cattle Work (in higher levels) – Demonstrates the horse’s ability to sort and move cattle.
More than just a sport, Working Equitation is an incredible training tool that improves the relationship between horse and rider. Here’s why we love it:
Enhances Communication & Trust – Subtle aids and precise movements create a deeper connection between horse and rider.
Refines Core Riding Skills – Working Equitation sharpens the basics—steering, stopping, and moving through obstacles with control—which are essential in any riding discipline.
Boosts Agility & Confidence – The obstacle course and speed phases challenge both horse and rider to navigate real-world riding scenarios, improving reaction time and adaptability.
Great for All Levels – Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced rider, Working Equitation can be tailored to your skill level. You can make it as easy or as challenging as you want, allowing for continuous growth.
Keeps the Horse’s Mind Engaged – Horses love variety, and the mix of patterns, obstacles, and problem-solving exercises keeps them mentally stimulated and eager to work.
Foundation for All Horsemanship – The skills developed in Working Equitation—balance, responsiveness, adaptability, and confidence—carry over into everything from trail riding to jumping, dressage, and ranch work.
At Jordan Stables, we incorporate Working Equitation into our training because it builds better riders and happier horses. This discipline helps us refine our horsemanship by focusing on precise control, fluid movement, and clear communication.
One of the things we love most about Working Equitation is its versatility. You can start with simple obstacles and patterns, then gradually increase the difficulty as you and your horse gain confidence. This makes it a fantastic tool for both young horses learning the basics and advanced horses refining their skills.
Another huge benefit is how engaging it is for the horse. Instead of repetitive drills, Working Equitation introduces new challenges that keep the horse’s mind active and eager to participate. It’s a great way to prevent boredom and develop a horse that enjoys its work.
Most importantly, Working Equitation builds a true partnership between horse and rider. The trust, balance, and harmony developed through this discipline create a willing, confident, and responsive horse—something that benefits every aspect of riding.
At Jordan Stables, we’re passionate about helping riders develop their skills and strengthen their bond with their horses. Whether you’re looking to compete in Working Equitation or simply use it as a training tool, we invite you to experience the benefits firsthand.

We love hosting our annual Working Equitation Show, which is a special opportunity for students to showcase their skills in front of an audience. It’s a fun and supportive way to experience a horse show without the hassle of hauling a horse, as registered students ride right here at our facility using our lesson horses.
Our Working Equitation Show is our most favorite as we get to see students in our lesson program to compete against one another within their program level. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to show off their hard work and share their progress with family and friends
