Cultivating Thinkers in 3-5
Room 2305
Have you ever felt at your wit’s end when students don’t know their math facts in spite of your efforts, and the efforts of those who went before you? In this session we will investigate alternatives to traditional methods for teaching fluency. Conceptual thinking over memorization in mathematics can unlock deeper learning for students. Nurturing conceptual understanding is critical for fluency development, because the outcomes are far reaching. Not only is students’ understanding and application of mathematics enriched, but conceptual thinking also equips them with necessary life skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability. This approach prepares them for future challenges, both in school and in real life.

By setting personal goals, students can create a roadmap for their academic journey. These goals can be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, helping students stay motivated and focused. By taking responsibility for their academic progress, students can cultivate a sense of ownership over their learning outcomes. This empowerment allows them to actively engage with their studies, seek help when needed, and celebrate their achievements along the way. Ultimately, by combining personal goal-setting with a proactive approach to learning, students can unlock their full potential and make the most of their educational experience.

Unveiling Insight -
Mastering the Science of Learning with Clarity
Auditorium
In his keynote presentation John unpacked what is meant by teacher clarity and how prioritizing teacher clarity strongly influences student learning in classrooms and schools. Participants explored how to make learning visible to each and every student in the classroom by addressing four essential questions:
1. How do you inform students what success looks like in learning?
2. How do you determine the appropriate level of challenge for students in your classroom?
3. In your classroom, what is the balance between surface and deep learning?
4. How do you evaluate your impact on student learning?
This breakout session will continue to dive deeper into these ideas.
