SPEAKER: What does the author reveal about who they are throughout the book? What perspective on the subject does the author bring?
PURPOSE: What does the author hope the reader does/believes/or understands by the end of the text?
AUDIENCE: What assumptions does the author make about the reader of this book? Who do you think it’s intended for?
CONTEXT: What broader conversation(s) does this text contribute to? Was anything relevant to the subject going on at the time it was published?
EVIDENCE: What specific evidence (facts/statistics/examples) does the writer introduce to support their positions/arguments?
CHOICES: What do you notice about the organization & tone of the text? What comparisons and anecdotes help the audience understand the message? What language (phrases, sentences) did you find effective, persuasive, and/or beautiful?
ISSUES OF POVERTY: How is poverty identified and described in this book? What causes and consequences of poverty (both positive and negative) are introduced? If your book is not directly about poverty, how does poverty contribute to/relate to the issues and concerns that are raised?
