How can I view my kid(s) grade?
Information Every Parent Should Know
1. Every week your child should receive a grade notice to take home.
2. You can view your student's grades, attendance, and assignments online by getting a HAC (Home Access Center) login. Call or stop by the Counseling Center to get this code.
Why do I have the grade I have in this class?
If it's bad, more than likely it is because you're missing work. Check your Eschool account for a detailed look at what assignments you are missing. If it has a "0" beside it, that means you have not turned it in. We will accept late assignments until the end of the semester as of this year. After the end of the semester, we will not accept any late assignments.
Also, if you have a "0," and you know you have submitted the work, please check with your teacher to make sure there was not a mistake made entering grades. If there is a mistake on our part, we will correct it and give you full credit.
What is our portfolio?
While this hasn't ever happened (therefore it's not "frequent") We are still going to note this in the FAQ section:
When you turn in your portfolio, that means you share ALL of the files with us that are in your Keystone folder in your Google Drive (i.e. your portfolio). We do this twice a semester (end of each quarter). It is worth approximately 80% of your overall grade.
Why do we get a zero of our portfolios not looking exactly like yours?
One of the key components of this course is learning to listen and follow directions. Students are given the instructions verbally (both via discussion and on the slides), modeled on the JPS Keystone Portfolio, and additional time (1 Week) given to revise, edit, and publish your files. This is why it is counted as a Test grade. It is testing your ability to listen and follow directions. Just as any Test, you are penalized for wrong answers. This test (like many others) does not give you partial credit for partially correct answers (i.e. mislabeled files).
If you are ever in doubt, come talk to us ahead of time.
How do I share my folder/file with you?
This is a link to download the movie showing this process.
How do you grade our assignments?
The "rubric" for grading your assignment is either 1) On the PowerPoint slide associated with the assignment, 2) announced in class, or 3) both. As a general rule, you can expect all assignments to be based on completion of the requirements laid out on the slides or via discussion (i.e. if you complete 50% of the requirements, you will receive 50% of the grade). You always have an opportunity to improve your grade through correction. The only grades that you will not be allowed to improve are your Test grades (i.e. Portfolio)
What it boils down to is, are you doing what you're supposed to be doing, when you're supposed to be doing it, the way you're supposed to be doing it. If you are, you should have no problem in this class. The people that have problems in this class are ones who do not listen and/or do not follow the directions on the slides. If ever in doubt, come talk to ua and we will help you.
Why do I have to say something/hear something that upsets/insults me or someone else?
A major portion of this course deals with communicating effectively. Some people do not know how to communicate effectively, nor do they understand that some of the things they say are hurtful to people. Other people do not understand criticism/feedback and how to use criticism/feedback. While we do not allow stupidity, we cannot prohibit ignorance.
For example, if a student (during a discussion) makes a racist/sexist/politically incorrect statement due to a belief, it will be corrected. That is part of the learning process...that person may not have known any better. However, if that person was intentionally saying something hurtful, sexist, racist, etc (using racial slurs, sexist slurs, etc) that's a disciplinary issue and that student will be sent to the office.
At every level of education, you are going to experience ideas and perspectives that you disagree with. Just because you disagree with them does not mean they're wrong and/or unacceptable. On the same token, just because you think it doesn't mean that it's right and/or acceptable.
Why are we doing these assignments?
I've had several students question how some of the assignments relate to what we're doing in here. Make sure that you listen to everything we discuss and read everything on the PowerPoints. All PowerPoints have a Standard at the top, with a Sub Standard under it. The Standard(s)/Sub Standard(s) is/(are) basically the answer(s) to this question.
For instance, "Standard 1 - Evaluate personal traits to promote success in school, community, and career." All of the slides contained in this Standard are describing personal traits that promote success in schools, communities, and careers. The Sub Standard, "1.1.1 - Interpret results from a variety of interest and skill assessments," is a personal trait that promotes success. You have to be able to evaluate your interests and skills to know what you like and what you're good at so you can be successful.
The lectures, discussions, and activities that we participate in are all things that supplement the lessons. Many times, the entire process is the lesson. You have to listen, participate, and reflect on everything to understand why we do what we do in here. If you have questions after that, please don't hesitate to ask them...that's what learning's all about.
Can we make up or correct our portfolios or semester grades?
No. Every other grade in this class can be turned in before the end of the semester with no deductions as of this year. However, you will not be allowed to make-up or correct test grades. Test grades are final. Pay very careful attention to classroom discussion and unit PowerPoints for directions.
Please check to make sure you have received points for everything you have turned in. If there is a mistake on my part, I will give you full credit.
