Classroom guidance lessons are provided to all students at each campus and are designed to foster students' academic, career, and personal/social development. Lessons are typically provided once a month for about 30-40 minutes for each class. Common topics include character education, academic skills, bullying prevention, coping skills, and career exploration.
Small group counseling is an opportunity for students to work together in a safe environment on common goals. Each group consists of 4-6 students, and usually meets weekly for 6-8 weeks. Counselors work with teachers to schedule groups at times that do not interefere with instruction. Topics may include coping skills, grief, social skills, and academic skills. Students can be referred for small group counseling by parents or teachers. Reach out to your campus' school counselor to learn more about specific groups being offered at your child's school!
School counselors do not provide long-term therapy but support connections to appropriate services. If you feel that your child is in need of more intensive supports, reach out to your child's school counselor.
