Hello students and parents! My name is Michael Engelken and this is my seventh year at MacArthur, and my third year as a CTE teacher. I will be teaching Career Development, Keycode, and STEM Systems Lab this year. This school year represents my 12th year as an educator with experience teaching 7th through 12th grade. My first five years of teaching were spent at Harrisburg College and Career Preparatory School, with the first two years teaching vocational agriculture, and the last three years teaching social studies. The first four years at MacArthur were spent as an 8th and 9th grade social studies teacher, with the last two years teaching Survey of Business and Computer Science 7/8. I came into education through the APPEL program, a non-traditional teacher's preparation program offered by the Arkansas Department of Education. Before becoming a teacher, I spent 10 years in the agribusiness sector, seven years spent with the Archer Daniels Midland corporation (ADM), and three years running my own business, selling crop insurance, providing risk management options for farmers, and providing marketing advisory, planning, and commentary.
My family is truly a HURRICANE family. My wife of 20 years, Jennifer, is a 24-year employee of JPS, serving as Assistant Principal for School Improvement/Curriculum at Math and Science Magnet School. We have one daughter, Morgan, who is an 11th grader at JHS. My hobbies include aviation (I am a licensed private pilot), reading, amateur radio (callsign: Kilo India 5 Papa Delta Quebec, or KI5PDQ), electronics, recreational shooting (especially black powder), playing drums, playing video games, spending time at Greers Ferry Lake, spending time with my family and anything technical that allows me to challenge myself.
I am very excited to be a member of the Cyclone family and look forward to working with all of my students and parents to make the 2026-27 school year a great one!
