Joliet Summer Scholars

Joliet Public School District 86 is happy to extend summer learning for our current fourth through seventh graders  (4-7) by offering in-person summer school to reinforce grade-level content and skills. Students are more ready to approach the next school year by having extra time with dedicated teachers during the summer. 

Reading, Writing, Phonics, Word Study

Joliet Summer Scholars will look forward and identify key skills needed for success in the next grade level. The summer reading program helps to bridge the gap between struggling and proficient readers through focused instruction of key literacy skills and comprehension strategies in English or Spanish. Small groups will reinforce and motivate readers with literacy skills and games. Along with student-teacher conferencing.

This emphasis on the future, combined with creative instruction and built-in review, ensures students will be ready for the academic year ahead.  

Fluency, Speaking, and Listening 

Students will use Readers' Theater to reinforce reading grade-level text orally with recognition and understanding in order to tell or recount a story. 

Students will practice language skills also by using their Chromebooks on Freckle and myON digital reader. Freckle practice of skill and MyOn digital books can also be accessed from home.

Mathematics Skills and Concepts

The summer mathematics program reinforces key concepts and builds mathematical and reading fluency by engaging non-fiction books that correlate with the mathematics learning standards. With creative instruction, teachesr offer effective strategies to support math mastery.  

Problem Solving and Discourse

Small groups will extend the learning with problem-solving and mathematical discourse through real-world connections in English or Spanish. Students will practice open-ended math tasks to discuss solutions using mathematical thinking and vocabulary.

Students will practice math skills using their Chromebooks on Freckle at summer school and at home.

STEM Connections

Each 4-7 grade summer scholar classroom will have engaging, hands-on  STEAM centers to reinforce the learning standards. Each teacher will explore and expose students to different career possibilities. 

Fourth Grade

• Famous Architecture, Traveling Artist, or Science of the Human Body

Fifth Grade

• Build a Better World, Oceanic Exploration, or Flitgh and Aerodynamics

Sixth Grade

• Claymation, Simple Machines, Summer Camp Classics, or Bricklab Core 6

Seventh Grade

• Eggs-traordinary Physics, Drones, Structural Design, or BrickLab Genetics

Physical Education (P.E.)

P.E. correlates directly to the health and well-being of students for the rest of their lives and has cognitive benefits, too, making students more receptive to learning. There is a significant body of research showing that children who are more physically active perform better in class and on standardized tests. Improving opportunities for physical activity is imperative for improving our children’s academic achievement and their health.​​​​​​​

Library 

Students and families are invited to use the Joliet libraries located at the Summer school sites from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The 4-7 grade program is located at Gomper Junior High School.
