Dear speech coaches,

         Welcome to Johnston for IHSSA District Individual Speech Contest! Here is some contest specific information as well as some general reminders. 

Headquarters: We will set up in the Media Center located on the second floor above the cafeteria.  Please plan to check in when you arrive. Stop by and provide a cell phone number we can use to contact you if there are issues during the day. 

Team Congregation Area: Teams will use the gym to store their possessions and use as a general hang out. This is located directly to the left when you enter door #2. While there are areas around the building that are designed with seating please do not allow your students to hang out in them. This will help keep the noise level down in the performance areas.

Parking: Please review the parking section to find information. 

Schedule: The schedule will be posted as soon as it is complete. If you have any drops/changes to your entry please fill out this form, CHANGE FORM

Schedule problems: If there are problems with the schedule, please send an email to jeremy.fitzpatrick@johnston.k12.ia.us. We will try to fix it as quickly as possible.

There will be drops! PLEASE have your performers & parents to the centers EARLY!

Please have your students be at their centers early. Since this is a district contest, there will be drops. Inform audience members who might be attending that centers sometimes run early and they should plan accordingly. With that said, students will not be required to perform before their scheduled time, but may volunteer to go early within the section if there are drops.   

Smile, You’re on Candid Camera: Photography and or videotaping are expressly forbidden without the written permission of the IHSSA.

Noise: Hall noise can be a problem from the perspective of performers, coaches, and spectators. Be considerate and be quiet in the hallways.

Donation: Remind your supporters about the $5 suggested admission donation for the contest site.  We will have greeters at the entrances collecting the donation and with schedule information.

As per SWIFT, “Please read your constitution – you must provide your own media formatted presentation. The contest site will have a backup just in case something happens to your projector or computer, however, it is your responsibility to bring your own equipment. DO NOT PLAN ON USING THE CONTEST SITE EQUIPMENT AS IT MAY NOT BE COMPATIBLE. 

Comment sheets: Please wait to pick up comment sheets until all ratings are posted. If you wish to leave before they are posted, leave a self-addressed, stamped envelope for us to send them to you. If you forgot your comment sheets, stop by the office and we will assist you. I will have a limited about of comment sheets available in the office. 

Results: Results will be posted in the gym and in the cafeteria. 

 It’s Iowa in February: After what happened in the past, we know weather can be a major factor with speech season! Weather related information will be on our website, WHO-TV and radio, KCCI-TV, and the IHSSA website.  No decision will be made until at least 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
