Highland Elementary
About Our School
Highland Elementary School is the newest and largest of five elementary schools located in the Johnson County School District. Highland is tucked in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, and can be described as the most centralized school within our community. Due to our location on US 23 in Staffordsville, a large number of our students live in other designated districts within the county and surrounding school districts. However, the majority of our students live in the Oil Springs and Hager Hill communities of Johnson County. Highland was constructed to replace Oil Springs Elementary in 1998, but the rich traditions of that school continue to thrive today. We adopted the same mascot, the Wildcat; and we continue to bleed blue and white while showing “Wildcat Pride” in all we do.
Highland Elementary houses approximately 390 students in grades Kindergarten through sixth, with an additional 30 Head Start students, and 20 Pre-School students. Highland Elementary is a school wide Title I school. Due to our enrollment, each grade level has two to three teachers. Additionally, we have four full time special education teachers, a full time guidance counselor, a Mountain Comprehensive Care counselor, two speech/language pathologists, one physical education teacher, a full time Digital Learning Instructional Coach, a full time Arts and Humanities/STREAM Instructor, and an occupational therapist. We also have four instructional assistants, one of which is working towards a degree in education.
Our school is a Leader in Me School which consists of our students and staff adopting the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People from the work of Stephen Covey to guide our students toward positive character development. Along with being active in encouraging social and emotional growth, Highland Elementary offers a variety of opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, including the following: football, boys and girls basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, peewee basketball, dance, flag football, academics, future and community problem solving, 4-H, Unit Club, Leader in Me Lighthouse Team, and Special Olympics.
We believe our purpose is to holistically educate all students to their fullest potential emotionally, physically, academically, socially, and morally. We want to serve our community by serving our students and giving them opportunities to grow in all aspects of life.
