8th grade Social Studies
Class overview
During the course of 8th grade social studies students will spend their time studying two major topics: Financial Literacy and American Government. The study of financial literacy will encompass elements of both micro and macroeconomics with more focus dedicated to the behavior of individual economic entities. The units of American Government will delve into both the national and the Illinois State Government with more time and attention devoted to the United States Federal Government. In an effort to maximize the educational experience students will be challenged to explore the course material through a variety of educational practices. In a normal school year, this will include, but will not be limited to: hands-on activities, simulations, educational computer software, assigned readings, internet based research, creation of student generated artifacts, visual media, and traditional worksheets. In addition, upon conclusion of the study of American Government, students will be expected, as a graduation requirement, to pass tests created to assess their knowledge and understanding of BOTH the United States Constitution and the Illinois State Constitution.
About me
This is my 20th year teaching, among other subjects, Social Studies at JJHS (of which I am an alum). My wife (Mrs. Beshel) teaches Health right next to my classroom so most of the time I'm on my best behavior.
I believe that it's vital for young people to develop the skills and knowledge related to Financial Literacy so upon entrance into the initially intimidating world of grown men and women they are better able to create and maintain their own financial well-being.
I also believe that among the greatest obligations a noble, " government of the people, by the people, for the people... " has is to educate the citizenry who will one day be tasked with forging the future of their nation. I am honored to be able to play a role in that process.
Aside from personal philosophies, I like birds, I like bees, and I like people...
