JPII Science Fair is an annual event open to all our current students and to any local primary students looking to show off/demonstrate their science skills!
We offer cash prizes for the winners as well as many spot prizes for those taking part on the evening.
How do I get involved?
All students in Y9 and Y10 at JPII will spend some of their lesson time in Science preparing for the fair.
They can either work on their own or with a small group of peers on their projects.
Primary students are welcome to enter by emailing dan.steggles@johnpaul.ac.nz.
NOTE: Entries will need to be at JPII no later than the 30th June in order for them to be marked in time for the fair a week later.
What do I need to prepare?
Students entering the Science Fair will be expected to carry out a scientific investigation following the usual scientific method and to produce a board to display, present your findings to other students and the public on the evening.
It is expected that you attend the evening.
You can use the attached planning sheet to help and you will also need to complete the log book below to submit with your entry.
What are the categories?
Last year we had prizes for Senior Students (Y11+), Year 10 students, Year 9 students and Primary Students.
Within each category a first place and runner up is chosen.
Categories may change each year dependent on entries.
How are the boards judged?
Boards will be judged by a minimum of 2 science teachers from JPII school as well as a number of our senior science students. Average scores will then be taken.
Once the top three boards have been chosen from each category the Science staff make final decisions on placings.
The mark scheme is the same one used by the WEST COAST Science Fair that is held shortly after ours, and finalists are selected to enter this.
I need some help with this?
What did the winners receive last year?
Prizes vary year to year depending on sponsorship.
Last year ranged from small prizes/vouchers to $250 for the 'peoples choice award' this is the board that is given the most votes by those attending the evening (since this is not awarded based just on the science presentation is everything!)
