Monday,Sept. 29, 2025: This morning, we read an article that discussed Canada's history with Indigenous Residential Schools and why we have National Day for Truth & Reconciliation in Canada. We prayed for the survivors, families, and communities impacted by residential schools, and for God's grace and healing to help us work toward a better future. After a short running recess, we gathered in the library to listen to Mr. Jensen, one of our grade six teachers who has Métis heritage, as he taught us about the history of Orange Shirt Day. We had music class with Mr. Wiens afterward, then buddy reading in the library after lunch. We also reviewed our French vocab and songs with Mme Lew, and wrote our spelling test at the end of the day. Friday, Sept. 26, 2025: We had a fantastic time on our hiking field trip to the Cleveland Dam at Capilano Regional Park! We enjoyed the view of the Capilano reservoir, which provides fresh drinking water to 40% of Greater Vancouver. We also explored the Capilano River Hatchery and learned how it supports the Coho and Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout populations in the river. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025: This morning after prayers, we reviewed the type and levels of Canada's government, then we discussed the main taxes in Canada and the services and programs that our taxes provide. After running recess, we learned about the value of place value digits, and we read the sixth chapter of our novel study and worked on the questions. In the afternoon, we started our new art project: self-portraits representing what brings us joy visually. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025: We prayed together then had Bible class with Mrs. Moodley and played soccer in PE with Mr. Chan. Then we read the fourth chapter of our novel study and Mrs. Wasik brought us "Turkish Delight" to try, one of the main character's favourite treats. In the afternoon, we took turns measuring the force of gravity with a spring scale in science class. We had music and French classes at the end of the day. Thursday, Sept. 11 2025: This morning, we discussed some current events that came up during morning prayers, and we asked God to help us be the kind of people who bring Jesus' light in response to darkness. In the afternoon, we learned what a scientist does and started our forces and motion unit. We had music and French classes at the end of the day. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025: After thanking God for the day, we wrote a journal entry about our first week of grade five, any challenges, and what our "dream house" would be like. We had French class with Mme Lew, then recess, and we worked on addition and subtraction sequences in math class. We received our new novel study, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," by Christian author CS Lewis, then we had our individuals photos taken. In the afternoon, we discussed why science is important, had music class with Mr. Wiens, and we started our typing lessons on typing.com. Monday, Sept. 8, 2025: We started our week by praying together, then we worshipped God as a school during Chapel. Mr. Rodgers taught us about Jesus feeding 5000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish! We made cards for our grade two reading buddies, and after running recess, we started our new Jump Math workbook and learned about addition and subtraction sequences. We had our first "All 5s" choir class with Mr. Wiens. In the afternoon, we met our buddy class outside on the playground, had French class with Mme Lew, and wrote our spelling assessment. Friday, Sept. 5, 2025: This morning after prayers, we learned about the narrative arc and we discussed the introduction (exposition), climax, and conclusion (resolution) of a story. Afterward, we discussed why we study history and we started our new Social Studies unit about Canadian federal elections and the political spectrum. We learned what a political party is and we learned about the priorities of each main party. After running recess, we wrote our math diagnostic to see what we remember from grade four. In the afternoon, we had PE class with Mr. Chan and Bible class with Mrs. Moodley, then Mrs. Wasik took us to Leaf Park to play with our friends at the end of the day! Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025: We prayed to begin our day and thanked God for our class. We met our Bible teacher, Mrs. Moodley, then we played tag games with our PE teacher, Mr. Chan. After recess, we worked in small groups to solve a collaborative math activity and we discussed what works well when working as a team. Mrs. Wasik read us a story titled, "You are Special," by Christian author Max Lucado. It reminded us about the importance of placing our value and identity in God, and not in the opinion of others. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025: We checked our planners this morning, then we played a fun game of "Mrs. Wasik Says" before our summer highlight sharing circle. We organized our school supplies and labeled our binders, then we wrote our summer highlights journal. In the afternoon, we opened our new art supplies and created personal name tags for our desks. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025: Welcome to grade five! We played some getting-to-know you games, chose our lockers, completed a student questionnaire and enjoyed our first Chapel with Mr. Rodgers. August 2025: We are busily preparing for the new school year and I cannot wait to meet all of my new 5W students! The first day of school is Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
