Welcome to the first quarter of what we are sure will be a fabulous year! Below you will find a brief overview of the topics and themes that will be covered in the core classes this quarter. Should you have any specific questions, please do not hesitate to contact the teacher.
Welcome to Grade 7 English! We are excited to begin the year by exploring a variety of books and genres to help students find their “just right” reading level and strengthen their appreciation of reading. Students are expected to read at home for 30 minutes each day from a book of their choice. This daily reading is an important part of their class and will be supported through regular conferences and classroom discussions.
Our first unit will focus on short story narratives. Students will learn the elements of narrative writing and work through the writing process to create a personal narrative called This I Believe, in which they share a belief that is meaningful to them. This assignment invites students to self-reflect and develop their unique voice as writers.
Parents can help support our work in the classroom by encouraging regular reading at home and discussion their books. Asking about favorite moments, characters, or ideas can help deepen understanding and spark thoughtful conversations.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
7th Grade math is where the fun really begins! Our first unit will focus on scaling. We will explore relationships that pertain to similar figures and proportionality, eventually gaining the understanding needed to prove or disprove relationships between quantities that may have proportionality, while finding the effect that “Scale Factors” have on lengths as well as higher-dimensional shapes.
Our second unit will dive deeper into proportionality as we explore ratios and proportional relationships in a variety of contexts, leading to unit rates, graphing, and writing equations that express proportional relationships. Future units beyond the first quarter will harness (and further deepen) our understanding of proportionality.

Social Studies is the study of what it means to be human. Through the disciplinary lenses of History, Geography, Civics, and Economics, we ask our students to explore the world around them and make sense of contemporary issues and events. In grade 7 Social Studies, we want our students to better understand their place in our world and how our individual actions can have a global impact.
In Grade 7 Social Studies, we introduce our students to several big concepts, such as the Sustainability Compass and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We use these as frameworks to shape our understanding of events and to better understand the interconnections we are all a part of.
During the first quarter and Unit 1, the concept of interconnections will be explored through resources and scarcity, with an emphasis on skill-building in note-taking and evidence-supported paragraph development. Through student voice and choice, several case studies will be used that offer a wide scope of relevant resource scarcity in the modern world. The major historical concept of cause and effect will be introduced and unpacked in this quarter; this will be expanded upon throughout the year.
To content knowledge, students will investigate the role of natural resources in our lives: What are they, where do they come from, and how do we use them? We will explore the relationship of resource scarcity with regard to competition and conflict. Students will use their research to develop an awareness campaign to communicate the issue to their chosen audience.
Researching, referencing, and expository writing are major skills developed in this quarter and consolidated throughout the year.
SCIENCE
Welcome to 7th Grade Science! This year, we will develop our science skills while exploring the world around us. Our emphasis will be on designing and carrying out investigations, modeling, arguing from evidence, and constructing new understandings of scientific concepts.
Our journey begins with investigating concepts in the field of Chemistry. During the unit, students investigate physical changes, such as changes in state, color, and texture, as well as chemical changes, such as the formation of new substances and changes in temperature and gas production. They explore the basics of chemical bonding and reactions, including the formation of compounds. Students learn about the Law of Conservation of Mass, which states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed, but can only be transformed from one form to another.
Throughout the unit, students will be encouraged to critically analyze real-world examples of pollution caused by chemical substances. They will investigate the sources of pollution, such as industrial processes, vehicle emissions, and improper waste disposal, and explore the chemical reactions involved in these processes. Moreover, students will learn about the concept of sustainability and how chemistry can contribute to finding solutions to pollution-related problems.
Physical Education
Welcome to Quarter 1 – 7th Grade PE!
We’re excited to kick off another energetic and engaging year in 7th-grade Physical Education!
This quarter, students will dive into Net Games, exploring skills and strategies through sports like volleyball and badminton. We’ll also explore Striking and Fielding Games, including cricket and Danish longball, focusing on teamwork, coordination, and game-play tactics.
As always, please remember to come prepared with your PE uniform, sports shoes, and a water bottle to stay active and hydrated throughout each class.
Let’s make it a fun and active start to the year!
Go Dragons!
