Revolutionizing The Spotlight

March 21rst, 2024

4:45 pm - 9:15 pm

JFK Auditorium

Spotlights have always been used to bring attention to meaningful topics, and in our constantly changing world, there seems to be a growing field of them. Using the spotlight to shift the focus unto new and meaningful topics and perspectives is the way to incite change and create a positive impact in our lives. Especially when it is an opportunity to give a voice and space to topics not talked about commonly. In this TEDxYouth event, high-school students will delve into these topics while searching to not only bring light to them, but also establish a new norm. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Ana Paola Alba & Macarena Rodriguez.

This talk is about how comedy can be a great tool in order to connect with other people by using humor in order to confront awkwardness in social situations. Understanding the difference between comedy and humor and knowing, will help you understand when each one could be more useful. It will show you the limitations that comedy and humor may have in order to have effective use of these tools. If you want to learn about this and more, come join me!

This talk is about the value of the social interactions and tutoring in cultivating a student's, children’s and teenagers scientific curiosity abilities during childhood, creating cognitive development habits. Based on personal experiences, encompassing creative tutoring, personal development and liberal education, I will search to show the true importance of building someone’s scientific curiosity from a young age. See you there!

This talk is a testimony on what it is like to deal with dementia as a granddaughter, a different perspective on a difficult subject. The talk shares lessons and opinions that have been built throughout the years while seeing a grandmother's dementia worsen, and argues against stigmas put on people with dementia, for example, being constantly patient and objective; the point is to honor people’s experience, as well as those who live dementia from an outside perspective. This talk argues that the first step is to destigmatize dementia and talk about it from an angle of empathy, for both yourself and them. You are worthy of understanding as much as they are, and building bridges between these gaps is the solution on how to deal with dementia. I hope to see you there!

This talk is centered on the idea that when building the path for your own future, there is no need for an individual to follow expectations they think people may have on them. Even less for those expectations to impact important decisions in someone’s life. It serves as a reminder that even with the pressure that comes with it, everyone’s road to success can look different and that doesn’t mean that some are more worthy than others. The one thing I would like people to take away from the talk is to think on their day-to-day basis and reflect on whether they are doing what they do for themselves or for others. Think about what you truly love, ignore irrelevant opinions on your own life, and improve the relationship with yourself in the process. If you want to hear about this and more, come join me!

During this talk, I will be providing different arguments to debate on whether humans are inherently violent or not. Psychologists and philosophers such as Darwin evolutionary theory and Maslow’s pyramid will be used to defend both perspectives. Rousseau and Paul Bloom are also going to help prove the point by providing evidence of how humans are naturally kind and compassionate. The aim is to show that humans are inherently good and that if we believe this, we can continue to evolve as human beings.  If you are interested in this, I hope to see you there!

This talk is about the positive and negative aspects within the dance world based on experiences in different schools, companies and environments. Focusing on the impact various aspects of the dance industry have on dancers both physically and mentally such as eating disorders, anxiety caused by perfectionism, etc. As well as showing the good side of dance and how it can be promoted and encouraged with the use of a good support system or group. I hope you join me!
