This site is dedicated to the memory of those who once lived in Jewish Verkhnedneprovsk, to give descendants a small feel for the place their ancestors called home.
Verkhnedneprovsk is located in the Kamianske Raion, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province) of south-central Ukraine. It was formerly part of the Yekaterinoslav Gubernia of the Russian Empire.
Verkhnedneprovsk lies on the Dnieper (Dnipro) River (also see smaller inset map). The nearest large city is Dnipro (formerly named Dnepropetrovsk, and before that, Ekaterinoslav, until 1926), about 45 miles / 72 km to the southeast. Kamianske, another port city along the Dnieper, is 16 miles/ 25 km southeast of Verkhnedneprovsk.
Kremenchuk, to the northwest of Verkhnedneprovk and the opposite side of the Dnieper in the Poltava region, is also noted on the map since there was notable commercial activity among Verkhnedneprovsk, Ekaterinslav and Kremenchuk in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, as well as population movements - something to keep in mind when looking for ancestors. (For example, for one researcher: An ancestor was born in Verkhnedneprovsk, moved as a child to Ekterinoslav and married in Kremenchuk. One of her siblings moved as an adult to Kremenchuk, but then married in Ekaterinoslav.) This movement is important to know since there are no known surviving Verkhnedneprovsk Jewish vital records... but you may find something in other towns, including those engaged in mutual commercial activities (such as Krivoy Rog - now Kryvyi Rih - further south).
The name Verkhnedneprovsk means place in the Upper Dnepr (Dnieper):
Verkhne - Upper
Dnepr - name of the river
ovsk - suffix meaning "belong to"
The Dnieper is the fourth largest river in Europe. It flows through Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine for about 1400 miles (2200 km) to the Black Sea.
