Radomyshl can be found 57 miles west of Kyiv and 30 miles northeast of Zhytomyr. It lies on the Teteriv River, a tributary of the great Dnipro River. Today, the city is part of the Zhytomyr Raion, Zhytomyr Oblast.
During the Russian Empire, Radomyshl was the capital of the Radomysl Uzed in the Kiev Governorate. The Uzed was more than twice the size of Rhode Island and once hosted over 40,000 Jews in various Jewish communities. The Uzed and Governorate was dissolved by the Soviet Union in 1923, and ever since Radomyshl was part of the Zhytomyr district. Other than Radomyshl itself, the largest Jewish communties in the Uzed included Korostyshiv, Brusyliv, Malyn, and Chernobyl. Yes, that Chernobyl.
