MY PHILOSOPHY

Voice

My approach to teaching is always guided by what inspires each student. In our lessons, we sing songs students love and feel connected to, because passion fuels practice, practice builds familiarity with the voice, and familiarity leads to confidence. I teach vocal techniques that strengthen the voice, and I also help singers overcome fear, so their skills can shine to their fullest potential.

Songwriting

A huge part of what we create is shaped by what we take in. In songwriting lessons, we explore intentional listening through guided “listening homework,” learn how to write without judgment, refine and edit our work, and clearly communicate our message both lyrically and through performance.

Guitar/Piano

I teach guitar and piano in a simple, practical way that helps students progress quickly. In just one lesson, students can learn the chord shapes needed for most pop music.

My philosophy and inspiration for teaching guitar and piano stems from my own experience taking lessons as a child. My first guitar classes were at age eight, where I learned to read sheet music and play classically. The problem was, even though I loved music, I wasn’t interested in what I was learning, and I became discouraged because it took a lot of work just to make a small amount of progress. I didn’t pick up the guitar again until much later in life. Looking back, I realized I had a love for music, just not the right guidance for how to play what I was interested in. That experience inspired me to help students learn a style of playing they enjoy from the very first lesson.
