The goal of this station is to set aside space where students hone the communication/collaboration skills required to be successful in a post-schooling environment, develop the academic skills required for independent learning/classroom success, and make deeper connections to current learning through robust academic tasks. Make sure you’re designing tasks that account for all 3 of these requirements.
If you’re not sure where to start with the real world ready collaborative station I strongly suggest you consider the verbs you use to create your task. If we only give students access to Level one depth of knowledge (DOK) we prevent deeper connections to schema, development of critical thinking skills, persistence stamina, and the development of academic skills required to become an independent learner. Learn more about DOK here.
Begin your search with tasks that begin with the stems located in the higher levels of the DOK wheel.
If you do not have a ready-made task that meets the requirements, it may be feasible to modify an existing task to facilitate a higher level of thinking. UNC Chapel Hill has a wealth of information on developing critical thinking tasks
**hint- Extension and challenge problems are a great place to start the search.
