Current Need

Problem - Solution

  • Define the problem you’d like to solve in your school: Bullying on high school and middle school campuses is a significant factor in student's reporting poor quality of social and/or emotional health. By advocating a proactive approach to monitoring student behaviors and incorporating student leaders to instill positive student interactions, bullying on the JCHS campus can be severely stifled.
  • Explain the need for change: Faculty, staff, and support service personnel can heighten awareness of the types of bullying and the frequency of those occurrences on high school campuses in order to curb its negative effects on the general student population. By increasing an awareness of personality differences and by providing tools to successfully communicate with a variety of personalities, the JCHS culture will be one of mutual support and encouragement.
  • Describe how this aligns to your school’s priorities and strategic plan: Social-emotional health is vital to the success of any organization. The goal is to be proactive, rather than reactive, when dealing with relational issues.
  • Propose a solution, including what other teachers you’d be working with: Organization: "Niceness is Priceless" / 1. Student athletes; 2. Students in Band / Choir / Drama / Speech; 3. General student body. 4. Teachers: volunteer / teachers with strong relational skills / coaches and organization sponsors
  • Identify the stakeholders you’d need to invest in your solution: Local businesses [for possible donations / incentives], Coaches, Organization sponsors, teachers, student leaders

According to Pacer's "National Bullying Prevention Center" website, "Bullying is an intentional behavior that hurts, harms, or humiliates a student, either physically or emotionally, and can happen while at school, in the community, or online. Those bullying often have more social or physical 'power,' while those targeted have difficulty stopping the behavior. The behavior is typically repeated, though it can be a one-time incident. Students often describe bullying as when 'someone makes you feel less about who you are as a person.'”
