The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish by Chloe Savage
Dr. Morley absolutely loves jellyfish. Naturally, she decides to embark upon a journey to find the fabled giant Arctic jellyfish. Along the journey, Morley and her team encounter narwhals, beluga whales, and orcas, but the giant Arctic jellyfish remains elusive - at least to the characters. Young readers will delight in pointing out the jellyfish as it hides under ships and behind icebergs. The book holds up to multiple readings; the ink and watercolor illustrations are gorgeous, detailed, and add humor to the story. Recommended by Catherine.
Fox Has a Problem by Corey Tabor
Corey Tabor's award-winning series has a new installment! As the title suggests, Fox has a problem - a wayward kite. Like all of Tabor's books, Fox Has a Problem is absolutely delightful. With repetition and only one to two sentences on each page, it's highly accessible to young readers. Beginning readers might need help with words like "problem", but overall the text is easily decodable. Tabor's adorable cast of characters, hilarious illustrations, and use of onomatopoeia are fun and engaging. Recommended by Catherine.
The Story of Gumluck the Wizard by Adam Rex
Helvetica the raven is exasperated. You would be, too, if you lived next to Gumluck the wizard. After all, he's a bit ridiculous. And the first time he met Helvetica, he destroyed her nest! From such inauspicious beginnings grows a beautiful friendship and a charming adventure. Join Helvetica and Gumluck on a low-stakes, low-stress romp through the Haunted Forest and a magical kingdom. Pencil drawings througohout the book add to its charm. Recommended by Catherine.
You Only Live Once, David Bravo by Mark Oshiro
Have you ever wished you could go back in time and fix a stupid mistake? David's first week at middle school is off to a horrible, anxiety-inducing start. He doesn't have any classes with his best friend, Antoine, and one of his new classmates bullies him for being adopted. Just when it seems things can't get any worse, he accidentally messes up Antoine's chance at joining the cross-country team. All David wants to do is start the day all over again.
Improbably, David's wish for a do-over introduces him to a talking dog with time-traveling powers. Together, the two try to get David's life back on track with surprising results. Join David as he navigates the joys and tribulations of middle school, explores his deepening feelings for Antoine, and learns to embrace the different aspects of his identity - all while bouncing around increasingly dismal alternate timelines. The Moth Keeper by K. O'Neill
The author of the beloved Tea Dragon series (The Tea Dragon Society, The Tea Dragon Festival, and The Tea Dragon Tapestry) returns with a beautiful graphic novel, marketed at kids 8-12. As a Moth Keeper, Anya has vowed to protect the Moon-Moths, sacred gifts from the Moon-Spirit, who blessed Anya's village for their decision to live nocturnally. Anya's vows are important to her, but it's hard to resist the pull of the sun.
Beautifully illustrated, O'Neill's newest graphic novel is a lovely coming-of-age story full of friendship, love, and magic. Recommended by Catherine.
Ancestory by Hannah Salyer
This January, we focused our purchasing on new children's nonfiction. With so many wonderful books from which to choose, it was difficult to pick just one to feature on our website! I finally landed on Ancestory, not only because of the stunning illustrations but also because it's the perfect book to share with kids who are interested in the past - particularly the prehistoric human experience. What can we learn about extinct animals from cave paintings? What did ancient humans use to make this art? Why did they make the art in the first place? How are we connected to these mysterious people? Slayer highlights ancient art from around the world to answer these questions - and to acknowledge when we don't quite know the answers. A truly beautiful book that can lead to many interesting conversations about our ancestral stories. Recommended by Catherine.
