W.E.B. DuBois academy. one pride. one brotherhood

About

The W.E.B. DuBois Academy is an innovative middle school in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) which opened during the 2018-19 school year. DuBois Academy’s consists of approximately 600 sixth through tenth- grade students, and in subsequent years, it will grow to become a sixth- through twelvth-grade school serving over 1000 students. We are a 1:1 VILS school for technology, which means all students receive an iPad at the start of each year.

DuBois Academy is open to all male students and our innovative learning environment offers an Afrocentric and multicultural curriculum that is both rigorous and engaging. While many schools focus on academic achievement as the sole measure of success, we believe both academic and social emotional excellence are needed to raise our young lions into the kings they were meant to become. We guarantee each student will demonstrate growth becoming more adept mathematicians, readers, writers, and speakers, while also becoming better role models, listeners, and leaders in their homes and communities.

The pedagogical practices of DuBois Academy draw from evidence-based research and culturally responsive teaching to actively engage our students as they grow as learners and self-aware young men. The core tenets emphasize literacy, numeracy, social sciences, technology usage, and speaking a foreign language. In addition, we show P.R.I.D.E. by focusing on leadership attributes, such as perseverance, resilience, initiative, discipline and empathy.

Creed

I was born to achieve greatness.
I will not be defined by my mistakes, but my willingness to accept correction to learn and grow.
My greatness will be a result of my work ethic, mentorship, and support.
I will achieve all of my goals.
I will be accountable for my actions and responsible to positively impact my community.
I was born to achieve greatness, and I will determine the king I become.
