I had a previous career as a field biologist.
Hello guardians and students! I am thrilled to teach your student this year in 8th grade Science on Team Ignite at Ramsey. It's going to be a fantastic year.
I had a previous wonderful career as an environmental biologist with a specialty in freshwater ecology. This is a picture of a stream restoration site that was one of my last projects for EPA.
I have worked on conservation of butterflies, salamanders, frogs, salmon, wolves, and habitats that are affected by the choices that humans make. I have now hung up my chest waders and hiking boots for teaching, and I love sharing my real life experiences with my students.
Since I used to be a Watershed Coordinator, my favorite lesson so far has been an interactive Nearpod lesson I created about watersheds!
This is a Modern Classroom!
I use the research-backed instructional model called the Modern Classrooms Project. My courses are blended, self-paced, and mastery-based and allow for student empowerment.
Blended Instruction: Students access teacher-created content through short, teacher-designed instructional videos before practicing skills with peers in the classroom and asking questions.
Self-Paced Structure: Students learn at their own unique pace within each class period completing work at home that they didn't get done in class.
Mastery-based: Students progress when they have demonstrated authentic mastery.
You can learn more about this through the video or at www.modernclassrooms.org.

Students can ask for help on an assignment through Google Classroom on each assignment as a "comment."
Communication is key for a successful year. Please make sure that the guardian contacts are up to date in Parent Portal (Infinite Campus) You can also call the school to update contacts.

Google Classrooms' To Do list is in a menu that looks like this in the top left corner of Google Classroom. Use it to prioritize tasks and keep on top of all of your classwork.
All classwork is assigned within Google Classroom. If a student is absent, they can stay on pace by working on the assignment from home.
Assignments are listed in the "Classwork" tab of each class.
Guardians with a gmail address in Infinite Campus can be invited to join their students' Google Classroom in order to view students' work, grades, and "To Do List," and get a weekly update on student progress.
Go to the Classwork Tab in Google Classroom for assignments. I use the Stream Tab for announcements.
Grading Policy
Grades are assigned using Ramsey's Standards Based Teaching & Learning Policy. Students will receive frequent feedback on progress, as well as multiple chances and ways to reach mastery after completing/redoing progression work. All assignments will be graded using a 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 0 scale. Grades will be composed of the following: Student Mastery 90%, Student Progression 10%.
Feedback/Grades
Parent Portal/Infinite Campus grades will be updated bi-weekly, and Google Classroom feedback will take place weekly. All Science grades will appear in key focus topic 2, 4, 6 and 7 only. On-time work takes priority, so late work will be graded when I have a chance, usually within 3 weeks of submittal.
Homework Policy
All assignments will be posted in Google Classroom. Parents with a gmail account can accept the invitation from Google Classroom to get a weekly update about their student's progress. Any work that students do not complete in class becomes homework to be completed that evening by the due date in Google Classroom. Students should expect to be taking notes, studying them, and practicing for mastery at home. Students should stay on pace with the due dates assigned in Google Classroom. Homework is meant to be practice and a continuation of what we are learning in the classroom. Students should be studying for mastery checks and tests.
Late/Absent Work
It is the students’ responsibility to ask for/retrieve their makeup work as soon as they return to school. They can access it even while absent through Google Classroom. Please check Google Classroom for missed assignments and lessons. According to JCPS policy, if students are absent from school, they have the number of school days they were absent plus one to makeup and turn in the work.
Retakes/Redos
At Ramsey, we follow standards based grading, so there are additional opportunities to demonstrate mastery. If a student wants to re-take a mastery assignment, they may do so at the whole-class re-take opportunity if all progression assignments and notes are complete. Outside of that day, if all progression assignments are complete, students need to make arrangements with the teacher to redo the mastery grade at another time during the school day (lunch or 5th/6th). Retake opportunities will close at the end of a unit and grading period, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
