WELCOME!

The Scholastic Art Awards seeks to identify students with artwork that exemplifies the most exceptional, the most outstanding, and the most creative potential in our 13-county region.  Jefferson County Public Schools is the Regional Affiliate for the Art portion of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for the Louisville Metro Area Art Region and has been since 1991.  The counties in our art region are: Jefferson, Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, and Spencer in Kentucky; Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, and Washington in southern Indiana.  Teens, grades 7-12 and ages 13-18, from public, private, and parochial schools, as well as homeschooled students, are eligible to participate.

CELEBRATING 101 YEARS!

Begun in 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers...the "Oscars" of the teen art world!  The Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  The awards have an impressive roster of past art winners including Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, Charles White, Kay WalkingStick, Red Grooms, Robert Indiana, Richard Avedon, Zac Posen, and Tschabalala Self.

The Art Awards program recognizes the work of talented young artists in Grades 7-12.  Students and one of their parents/guardians MUST sign the entry form(s) prior to submission, verifying the orginality of the work and granting permission to participate in the Awards program.  Jurors from a wide variety of art disciplines (professional artists, college/university faculty, and retired art educators) evaluate each work entered in one of sixteen 2D and 3D art and design process categories. Middle school submissions are juried separately from high school.  Jurors do not know students’ names, schools, race, or gender and artwork is judged solely on three criteria: originality, technical proficiency, and emergence of a personal vision/style.  Students have freedom of expression and no works will be disqualified from judging or an award based on content; however, school, museum, and gallery policies may limit exhibition opportunities.

More than 13 million students have participated and more than $40 million has been distributed nationally in awards and scholarships in the past five years alone!  Each year, more than 77,000 students in grades 7 through 12 participate in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Young artists across the country submit more than 300,000 creative works of art to a network of approximately 82 regional art affiliates.

More information about the 2024 Awards program can be found on the national website or our regional webpage via the national website.  The 2024 submission deadline for Art entries in our region was Wednesday, January 10, 2024!  Go to the regional webpage on the national website for details.

Educators in our region's counties that will have students participating should email Melisa Gano (melisa.gano@jefferson.kyschools.us)  as soon as possible at the beginning of each school year to get on her email distribution list.  Important information in preparing for the coming year's Scholastic Art Awards program for our region and detailed submission procedures exclusively for educators will be shared.
