There's a few others that fall outside the major scale, as well!
Pie Jesu
Dona eis requiem
Pie Jesu, Domine
Agnus dei,
Qui tollis pecata mundi
Pie Jesu
Dona eis requiem sempiternam
Why this song?
Singing in Latin is a foundational experience for young singers for many reasons. Music from the Catholic tradition makes up a large portion of Western choral music throughout history. The pure vowels used in Latin provide the opportunity to practice singing with these vowel shapes, helping students learn to produce an open, free tone. Singing in Latin also provides an introduction to sing in a foreign language without being overly challenging. Throughout the choral curriculum, students are exposed to music from many time periods, cultures and traditions. This is piece is a step towards being prepared and comfortable enough to succeed with music that presents a larger challenge to many of us.
Merciful Jesus
Grant them rest
Merciful Jesus, Lord
Lamb of God,
Who takes away the sins of the world
Merciful Jesus
Grant them rest everlasting
My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation.
I hear the real, though far off hymn
that hails a new creation.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that rock I'm clinging.
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
What though the tempest 'round me rears,
I know the truth it liveth.
What though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of Heav'n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble, sick with fear
And hear their death knells ringing;
When friends rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell, in dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging;
When friends by shame are undefiled,
How can I keep from singing?
No storm can shake that inmost calm
while to that rock I'm clinging.
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
