If you like Newsela and CommonLit, you will appreciate Actively Learn-- a digital reading platform that contains ELA, Science, and Social Studies reading materials (grades 3-12). Actively Learn works well with Google Classroom and has many unique features: it allows you to import internet articles, Google Docs, or PDFs and turn them into interactive reading assignments; it offers student reading aids such as translation, note taking and more. Flippity is a free website and also a Google Sheets add-on that allows you to create flashcards, quizzes, and more. You do not need to create an account. Once you sign in into your Google account, create a copy of a template, then modify it. When you create flashcards, you can add pictures and videos in addition to definitions. In order to add a video, you will need to select a video you want your students to view, right click on the video and choose “copy embed code”, then paste the code into the spreadsheet. In order to add a picture, you will need to go to the website that contains the image you want to use and right click on the image then select “open image in a new tab”, copy and paste the URL (important: it has to have .png at the end). Finally, publish your template to the web, get your Flippity.net link, then bookmark it and share.

Doc Academy is the school program of Doc Society--a nonprofit supported by a number of US and European Foundations including Ford Foundation. Doc Academy provides free, easy-to-use resources for secondary school teachers such as short clips from critically-acclaimed documentary films, lesson plans, and activities on various topics.
